Jeffrey Epstein claims New Mexico drew him after 1990 — not for the land itself, but for the knowledge clustered there. The valley between the Sangre de Cristo and Sandia mountains is the birthplace of the atomic age. Physicists and mathematicians drift out of Los Alamos into private startups and the Santa Fe Institute. Zorro Ranch, he says, was no accident; he places it 23 miles from the Institute and 50 miles from Los Alamos.

He endows a chair at the Institute, named for Robert Maxwell.

Nuclear weapons are designed not to be used - built on the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD). Every warhead in a Wyoming silo, every Trident missile under the Pacific, every gravity bomb on a B-2 — none are meant to be used. They are meant to be feared.

As in, “You’d be MAD to use them.”

The Soviets understood by the mid-1970s that they could not out-build, out-miniaturize, or out-submarine America. The gap was unbridgeable but as long as each side had enough to destroy the other, a peace of sorts would prevail.

What they feared is what they couldn’t see.

Nuclear secrets were always the game. It was Robert Maxwell’s first assignment

In the Spring of 1945 in a German interrogation room - a 22-year-old Czech Jewish officer — brave, brilliant, family lost to the Nazis — was handed a dossier: Alsos. The order: find out what Heisenberg knew.

Six years after Alsos, Maxwell pitches British intelligence. The Soviets are flooding the world with physics and engineering journals. Nobody in the West is translating them. Maxwell offers. MI6 signs off. In 1951 he takes Pergamon Press, flies to Moscow, signs an exclusive copyright deal with VOuAP, and secures the right to translate Soviet science into English. The deal gives him decades of cover to sit inside rooms with Soviet nuclear physicists.

If you're asking the right question: the answer is a triple agent. His loyalty tree was Russia, Israel, and only then, British.

It was enough to catch the attention of the FBI. On December 9, 1953, J. Edgar Hoover signs a memo on Maxwell. Four words headline the page.

INTERNAL SECURITY — R & GE

R is Russia. GE is General Espionage. The case file is 105-25063.

“Bureau files contain no information identifiable with subject,” Hoover writes. “It is desired that you obtain through your sources identifying data and information concerning subject’s travels to the United States.”

By the end of 1953, the FBI has classified Maxwell as a Russian espionage subject moving toward the American atomic establishment.

Maxwell lands at Idlewild on April 1, 1954, on Pan American Flight 101. The FBI has asked Customs and Immigration to flag him at every East Coast port of entry. Pan Am treats him like a prince — the London cable reads

“GIVE HIM THE BEST OF SERVICE AS HE IS FREQUENT PAN AMERICAN AIR LINE TRAVELER.”

The customs lookout fails. He catches his 7:15 connection to Toronto.

Seven months later, he is back. This time the FBI listens in real time through the Atomic Energy Commission’s switchboard.

“ON OCTOBER TWENTYSEVEN LAST SUBJECT TRIED TO REACH DR. ALVIN WEINBERG, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OF OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY, AND DR. L. HAWORTH, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR OF BROOKHAVEN NATIONAL LABORATORY. ON OCTOBER TWENTYEIGHT LAST SUBJECT CONTACTED BY TELEPHONE DR. WALTER ZINN, DIRECTOR OF ARGONNE NATIONAL LABORATORY, LEMONT, ILLINOIS.”

Weinberg runs Oak Ridge, where uranium for the Hiroshima bomb was enriched. Haworth runs Brookhaven, the AEC’s flagship Long Island research facility. Zinn runs Argonne, where Enrico Fermi built the world’s first reactor. Inside forty-eight hours Maxwell reaches all three of them, plus John von Neumann, newly appointed to the AEC itself.

A McGraw-Hill editor named J. H. Luntz lays out Maxwell’s pitch to an FBI agent a few days later:

“MAXWELL’S plan is to have ZINN or HAFSTAD to be Editor in Chief of the American atomic energy magazine and planned that the Directors of the AEC National Laboratories would be Editors. MAXWELL would set up a fifteen man Editorial Board of American scientists… No renumeration would be involved… MAXWELL’S company would cover the entire costs on a monthly basis.”

A fifteen-man editorial board of every AEC national-lab director. Writing for free. In a journal owned by a Czech-born British publisher who has just signed an exclusive copyright deal with Moscow.

An access list.

On October 29, 1954, Maxwell sits for an interview at AEC headquarters. He confirms the pitch in writing:

“MAXWELL INDICATED HE WAS IN US ON BEHALF OF THE ABOVE JOURNAL… SUBJECT IS WORKING WITH DR. J. V. DUNWORTH OF HARWELL, ENGLAND.”

Harwell is the British equivalent of Oak Ridge. Dunworth is the deputy to Cockcroft, the Nobel laureate who runs it.

The FBI writes it all down. Then closes the case. File 105-25063 goes to storage for thirty years.

But the operation endures. Through Maxwell’s daughter, and her partner Jeffrey Epstein. Pergamon is gone but the funding of scientists - that persists through the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics at Harvard, through Martin Nowak, through MIT Media Lab via Marvin Minsky, through dinners at Zorro halfway between Los Alamos and Sandia, and through a chair at the Santa Fe Institute that he endows and names for Robert Maxwell.

Epstein’s hat tip to the past leaves Robert Maxwell’s name on the door. The scientists change as the decades pass. The operation does not.

I ask Ari Ben-Menashe in 2019 when he first met Jeffrey Epstein.

Ben-Menashe: “It was 1981. Maxwell had to introduce him to us. He wanted us to accept him as part of our group.”

The group is a cell of Israel’s Directorate of Military Intelligence. Ben-Menashe is a senior operative. The press has always said Mossad. Ben-Menashe corrects me on tape.

Ben-Menashe: “I was in this group of military intelligence. They keep on saying Mossad — that’s not it.”

I ask what Maxwell said when he pushed Epstein in.

Ben-Menashe: “Your Israeli bosses have already approved. It came down from up above.”

Ben-Menashe did not think Epstein was competent for arms work. But Maxwell, he says, had a different reason.

Ben-Menashe: “He was a good-looking guy. And Miss Maxwell — she fell for him.”

I ask about Ghislaine directly. Was she an agent too?

Ben-Menashe: “Oh, definitely. Military intelligence as well.”

A senior Israeli Directorate of Military Intelligence operative, on video, identifying Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell as assets of the same service he worked for. Why would Israeli intelligence want to blackmail Americans?

Ben-Menashe: “These guys were seen as agents. They found the niche for themselves. Blackmailing American and other political figures. It was quite their M.O.”

Then he laughs.

I bring up PROMIS in the first hour. The DOJ’s case-management software walked out of the Justice Department in 1982 and ended up running, bugged, inside central banks and nuclear facilities on every continent. No convictions. No names.

Ben-Menashe: “Yes. We were the ones that gave it to him, and he gave it to the Russians. And sold it to everybody else around the world.”

I press on the theft. Two people went in. Who was the second? Ben-Menashe won’t say his own name, but drops the name of the man who wrote it: “I know Hamilton. I know Hamilton. I know what I’m doing.”

Later, over the phone, Ben-Menashe admits he was the second man. He went, under cover, into a building of the United States Department of Justice. He came out with the software. He handed it to Robert Maxwell.

Maxwell put a backdoor into it.

Ben-Menashe: “The PROMIS was sold to the GRU. And sold to everybody else around the world.”

One PROMIS installation Maxwell sold was in New Mexico.

Ben-Menashe wasn’t the only Israeli spy working on nuclear secrets.

Arnon Milchan’s office is on Sunset Boulevard. He is producing Brazil for Terry Gilliam and preparing Once Upon a Time in America for Sergio Leone. To everyone who calls him, he is Hollywood’s rising producer.

The calls that matter come from Richard Kelly Smyth, an engineer in Huntington Beach who runs a small company called MILCO International. MILCO ships electronic components through Heli Trading — a front for the Israeli Ministry of Defense.

The components are krytrons. A krytron is about the size of a pen cap. Under high voltage, it’s the fast-firing switch that detonates the plutonium implosion lenses inside a nuclear warhead.

Between 1980 and 1983, MILCO ships 810 krytrons to Israel.

Smyth’s contact at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, during the shipments, is the deputy chief of mission. His name is Benjamin Netanyahu.

Federal prosecutors indict Smyth in 1985. He flees to Spain. Netanyahu is never charged.

November 2013: on Israeli television program Uvda, Arnon Milchan confesses that the entire krytron operation was run by him, for Israeli military intelligence, under cover of a Hollywood production company. The confession appears in his 2011 authorized biography two years earlier.

Then-Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appears on the same broadcast.

“Arnon is a long-time intelligence asset,” Netanyahu says. “He contributed enormously to the security of the state.”

The security of the state, in diplomatic Hebrew, means the bomb.May 25, 1984. The FBI’s San Francisco field office opens and closes an investigation into a Berkeley, California information firm called Information On Demand, Inc. Its new owner, as of 1982, is Robert Maxwell, through Pergamon International.

Two weeks later, employees of the National Security Agency walk into the FBI’s Albuquerque field office and describe the same company. The Albuquerque SAC cables FBI Headquarters in a SECRET airtel:

“The information provided by [REDACTED] was received from employees of the National Security Agency (NSA) and has to do with the purchase of Information On Demand, Inc., by one ROBERT MAXWELL, the owner of Pergamon International, a British information firm.”

The NSA employees have flagged the acquisition as connected to “various available means of tapping government information data bases.”

Tapping government information data bases.

This is June 1984. Two years after Ben-Menashe walked PROMIS out of the DOJ. One year after Maxwell sold the backdoored software to the GRU.

On July 19, 1984, the FBI Director cables both offices and connects them as the same target.

Then Headquarters supplies Albuquerque with the reason to close:

“this might be dated information which relates to the data furnished by FBIHQ concerning the severing of the rights to the data base by Pergamon and the breaking of the data exchange agreement.”

In other words, Washington has told Albuquerque the problem is already solved. The tip is dated.

Albuquerque accepts the framing. Closes the case.

“Until such time as NSA re-establishes contact and expresses further interest in this matter, Albuquerque is taking no further action and this matter is being placed in a closed status.”

And:

“The personnel at Sandia National Laboratories were told that if NSA has a desire to establish contact with the FBI in this matter, a logical step would be to contact FBIHQ and pursue it through that channel.”

The Sandia personnel are told, in writing, that the National Security Agency is no longer welcome to walk into the local FBI field office about a British publisher tapping American databases. Any NSA contact must route through Washington.

“There is a chance they will come to Albuquerque in September,” the cable adds. “If this occurs, FBIHQ will be apprised of any pertinent data received.”

If the NSA shows up again, Washington is notified.

The American intelligence apparatus raised the alarm. Washington buried it, and then Washington surveilled the alarm-raisers.

While the FBI closes the Maxwell case, a U.S. Navy civilian analyst named Jonathan Pollard photocopies 800,000 pages of classified material and hands them to a handler at the Israeli Embassy. The material includes the acoustic signatures of American nuclear submarines.

American boomer submarines — the Ohio-class Trident platforms — are the most survivable leg of the nuclear triad. They exist to be undetectable. Hand an adversary their acoustic signatures and the deterrent collapses.

Pollard delivers. The embassy sends to Tel Aviv. Tel Aviv, multiple U.S. inspector general reviews later conclude, sends onward to Moscow.

The Soviets already have PROMIS.

Now they have the noise profiles of the submarines carrying the warheads PROMIS is helping them map.

1986. Maxwell is in the Mirror building on Holborn when his secretary tells him the Israeli Embassy is on line two.

His editors at the Sunday Mirror have been fielding an approach for three weeks from Mordechai Vanunu, a former Dimona technician who worked for a decade inside Machon 2, the underground plutonium-production building. Vanunu has photographs and diagrams.

Maxwell picks up. He tells the Embassy what the Sunday Times has, what the Mirror has been offered, and when the material will publish.

Within days, a Mossad honeypot named Cindy meets Vanunu in London and lures him onto a flight to Rome, where Israeli security ties him to a stretcher and flies him home. He will spend eighteen years in Ashkelon prison, mostly in solitary.

I. THE SURVIVOR

Howard Lutnick has a knack for dodging catastrophe.

He built his identity on survival. Both parents gone by eighteen—his mother to lymphoma in seventh grade, his father to cancer five years later. He talked his way into Haverford College with no money, graduated, and joined Cantor Fitzgerald at twenty-two. By twenty-nine, he was president. By his mid-thirties, he ran the firm. A bond trader’s bond trader—sharp, relentless, convinced the world owed him nothing and he owed the world less.

But Lutnick is best known for surviving the largest terror attack on U.S. soil.

September 11, 2001. Howard Lutnick was not at his desk on the 101st floor of One World Trade Center. He was taking his five-year-old son Kyle to his first day of kindergarten. It was the only reason he was alive.

By the time the towers fell, 658 of Cantor Fitzgerald’s 960 New York employees were dead. His brother Gary among them.

The nation watched him weep on live television. He became the face of Wall Street’s grief and, in the months that followed, its resilience. He pledged twenty-five percent of the firm’s profits to the families of the dead. Within two years, Cantor Fitzgerald was more profitable than it had been before the attacks.

One survival event is notable. But Howard Lutnick has had more than one near-death experience—enough that you have to stop calling it luck and start asking whether he was privy to information that allowed him to dodge impending chaos.

Which brings us back to the crash of 2008—seven years after 9/11.

Every major financial institution in America was hemorrhaging money. The worst crisis since the Great Depression. With one notable exception: Cantor Fitzgerald earned eighty percent more than it had the year before.

Every time the world burned, Howard Lutnick walked out of the fire richer than he’d gone in.

Was it luck? Timing? The survival instinct of someone orphaned young, who learned to read the room before the room read him?

Or was it something else—the certainty of a man tipped off by those who saw it coming, moving at exactly the right moment?

Howard Lutnick was Jeffrey Epstein’s neighbor on East 71st Street for years. The two houses shared a genealogy, if you will—both connected back to Leslie Wexner. They share a wall.

Both properties trace back to the same man. In the late 1980s, two separate companies purchased the adjoining townhomes. Both used the same address on their incorporation documents: a Columbus, Ohio address associated with Les Wexner’s Limited Brands. Wexner—or entities he controlled—acquired both properties. Then he distributed them. 9 East went to Jeffrey Epstein for one dollar. 11 East went to Howard Lutnick in 1998 through “Comet Trust” for ten dollars—transfer taxes indicating a value of approximately $7.6 million.

The man who built the vault. And the man who would trigger the sell-off. Neighbors. Both previously owned by Leslie Wexner. On a street with fewer than twenty houses.

Jamie Dimon was soaking in his storied banking career at Avra on East 48th, surrounded by his family for his 52nd birthday. His twin brother Teddy was there. His wife Judy. His daughter Julia, and his parents—soaking in a specific type of Jewish parental pride: nachas.

Dimon’s phone vibrated. He thought about letting it go to voicemail, but this was not a call you could afford to ignore—even if you were Jamie Dimon.

He turned to Julia and apologized, then stepped outside into the brisk reality of New York in March.

Alan Schwartz. Bear Stearns CEO. Gone was the steady polish of a Wall Street lifer; in its place, desperation.

“I’m sorry to interrupt, but it’s important. It’s the firm. We’re in trouble.”

“Jamie, I need thirty billion dollars tonight, otherwise we’re going to go bankrupt in Asia in the morning.”

That’s a number that even Dimon coudln’t fathom.

“Alan, I don’t even know how to get thirty billion dollars.”

What happened in the next 72 hours—and who walked away with billions—is the story of the vault in action.

If Jeffrey Epstein hadn’t set the first domino in motion, Bear Stearns might have survived the coming inferno. Epstein didn’t just push—he engineered a scheme whose success depended on Bear Stearns’ collapse. Deep within the labyrinth of questionable assets buoyed by mortgage-backed securities lay the true heart of Bear: Liquid Funding Ltd. More than an investment vehicle, it was a vault—a fortress shielding the firm’s most powerful stakeholders. But as with many things in life, saving Liquid Funding would require two skills Jeffrey Epstein had mastered: timing, and access.

By 2006, Bear Stearns had become a liquidity pump.

The firm’s 2007 Investor Day presentation boasted: “#1 in U.S. MBS for the third year in a row.” “Top 5-ranked Global CDO underwriter.” Bear originated mortgages, packaged them into securities, labeled them AAA through compliant rating agencies, and sold them to institutional investors hungry for profits and higher stock prices. The machine ran day and night—mortgages in, securities out, fees skimmed at every step.

But what was touted as an innovation was actually a scheme built on fraud—built on liar’s loans—mortgages peddled to unsuspecting homeowners—and companies created entirely to extract profits while generating toxic debt.

Commercial mortgage-backed securities—CMBS—were the toxic waste of the real estate world: casino debt, distressed properties, overleveraged developments that couldn’t even service their interest payments. Bear Stearns specialized in taking this refuse, repackaging it into tranches, securing AAA ratings for the senior pieces, and quietly feeding it back into the system.

One of the best customers for Bear Stearns’ CMBS was Donald Trump.

Trump’s casinos had been functionally bankrupt since 1991. The Taj Mahal, the Plaza, the Castle—all hemorrhaging cash, all drowning in debt, all kept alive through an endless cycle of refinancing. Every few years brought a ritual: another restructuring, another round of bondholders taking haircuts, Trump extracting management fees, and Bear Stearns repackaging the debris into new securities for the next wave of investors.

Ace Greenberg—Bear’s legendary chairman—had been doing this for Trump since the early ‘90s. When every other bank walked away from the casino debt, Bear stayed. When Trump needed bridge financing that no legitimate institution would touch, Bear found a way. They’d take the Trump casino bonds, bundle them with other commercial mortgages, slice them into CDOs, and feed them into vehicles like Liquid Funding.

This was the beautiful scam: Trump’s worthless casino debt, rated junk on its own, became AAA-rated securities when buried inside a structured product. Rating agencies blessed it, institutional investors bought it, and money market funds—the supposed safest investments in America—held it. No one realized they were funding a gambling operation—and a suspected Russian money laundering front—that had never turned a profit.

William K. Black calls it “control fraud”—when those in control weaponize a company to defraud everyone else. Black, a federal regulator during the Savings & Loan crisis, watched the pattern repeat: not robbing banks from the outside like Willie Sutton, but from within, using the institution itself as the instrument. The company makes doomed loans, executives extract bonuses on manufactured short-term profits, and when collapse comes, they’ve already cashed out. The fraud isn’t a glitch—it’s the business model.

Bear Stearns wasn’t a bank that made bad bets by accident. It was pumping debt into corporations at 14% interest rates that could never be repaid—A machine designed to originate toxic debt, disguise it as safe, sell it to pensions and money market funds, and siphon off fees at every step. The insiders knew the loans were bad, the ratings were fiction, and that collapse was inevitable. They didn’t care; they’d be rich before it happened, and first in line for the bailout.

By 2006, Liquid Funding held $6.7 billion in these securities—leveraged 180-to-1. Commercial paper sat atop mortgage-backed securities, themselves backed by mortgages already in default. A $100 million equity cushion supported $6.7 billion in debt. The entire structure was a bomb waiting for a spark.

Bear Stearns wasn’t the only bank misleading the American public. Nor was Liquid Funding the only offshore vehicle holding these toxic debts. But while all the others would crash with the market, Jeffrey Epstein’s SIV would be paid out in full.

“I think we both possess the skill of seeing patterns,” Leslie Wexner told Vicky Ward about his protégé, Jeffrey Epstein, in a 2003 profile. “But Jeffrey sees patterns in politics and financial markets, and I see patterns in lifestyle and fashion trends. My skills are not in investment strategy, and as everyone who knows Jeffrey knows, his are not in fashion and design.”

And there’s one pattern Jeffrey Epstein had seen many times before: When markets crash, when stock prices are pumped and dumped, the only way to win is to make sure you trigger the crash yourself. As with any bankruptcy, it gives you pole position to extract what you need.

That’s the scheme. That’s how you win big. In the case of Bear Stearns, the payout for participants would be $6.7 billion—a very good payday, if you could do it quietly and without attention. All you needed were the right people in the right places: the company’s CEO, the acquiring bank’s CEO, and the financial team advising the president. If it worked, they would walk away with a small fortune while the entire market crashed and burned around them.

With his $57 M redemption in April, Epstein had lit the fuse that would eventually implode Bear Stearns. By July, everything was playing out as expected—but in Miami, one person was threatening it all: a dogged prosecutor, hunkered down, facing the storm of the century and refusing to budge.

The Bear Stearns Enhanced Leverage Fund and the Bear Stearns High-Grade Structured Credit Fund collapsed on July 31, 2007—the very same day Epstein’s lawyers met with the US Attorney for the Southern District of Miami, Alex Acosta, without his chief prosecutor in the Epstein case.

Marie Villafaña had spent eighteen months building her case: fifty-three pages, sixty counts—sex trafficking. Now she learned the so-called dream team was meeting with the U.S. Attorney and excluding her. She feared her case would be buried by Epstein’s defense attorneys—Kenneth Starr, Jay Lefkowitz, Alan Dershowitz—a multimillion-dollar lineup assembled to crush her work. Villafaña was determined not to let that happen, not with victims like Maria Farmer depending on her.

She signed the request on her desk: grand jury subpoenas for every financial transaction from January 1, 2003, to the present. Subpoenas went to JPMorgan Chase and other banks. Every transaction. Every wire transfer. Every cash withdrawal. Every shell company. Then she wrote to Epstein’s attorneys:

“(In other words, if the sex offense case is resolved, the Office would close its investigation into other areas as well. The matter has not been, and it does not appear that it will be, resolved, so the money laundering investigation continues, and Request Number 6 [seeking records of every financial transaction conducted by Epstein and his six businesses from ‘January 1, 2003 to the present’] will not be withdrawn.)”

Request Number 6 threatened to expose the entire architecture. If prosecutors followed the money far enough, they’d find Liquid Funding. They’d see Bear Stearns owned 40%. They’d see JPMorgan serving as Security Trustee. They’d see how Trump’s casino debt was laundered into AAA securities, and the $6.7 billion structure already dying—unable to roll its commercial paper as credit markets froze.

They would see how it all connected.

They would find Leslie Wexner.

Epstein’s dream team had tried everything to delay signing the non-prosecution agreement. But as summer spilled into fall, Villafaña played the only ace she had left. She thought about Maria Farmer’s declaration—about being held captive in New Albany. She scoured Wexner’s police records, but found nothing tying him to criminal charges. He was either squeaky clean or very good at covering his tracks. But you don’t send in that kind of legal firepower unless there’s something to hide.

Then it dawned on her: if even the faintest whiff of Epstein’s activities was traced to the reclusive Ohio billionaire, the whole scheme would collapse. So she made another call.

Les Wexner. The Limited. Victoria’s Secret. Twenty-one years of business with Epstein. Power of attorney since 1991. Co-president of the New Albany Company. Office at The Limited headquarters in Columbus, Ohio.

She expected Wexner to simply call off his dream team. Instead, in the weeks following Villafaña’s call, Wexner—perhaps offering the greatest confession of guilt—severed his relationship with Epstein and Maxwell.

Within weeks, documents showed assets shifting: interests in Wexner’s Aspen ranch moved from Epstein’s entities to those controlled by Abigail Wexner. After twenty-one years, the umbilical cord was being cut.

Not because of the sex crimes—those had been happening for years, on Wexner’s properties, with Wexner’s security guards present.

Wexner was cutting ties because Villafaña’s financial investigation—Request Number 6—threatened to expose the network. The real operation. The reason Epstein was valuable in the first place.

When Epstein and his attorneys learned of the Wexner call, they were furious. In a complaint filed months later, Kenneth Starr wrote to the Deputy Attorney General:

“She calls Les Wexner to inform him of the investigation.”

“Villafaña threatened to broaden the investigation to include a money laundering violation, though all the funds expended were simply Mr. Epstein’s, and a violation of a money transmitting statute, though Mr. Epstein has no such business.”

The defense wasn’t panicking about the sex crimes—they were panicking about exposing the network.

For months, the attorneys tried to bully her into submission. But Villafaña never gave up.

On September 24, the non-prosecution agreement was signed.

They told us it was subprime mortgages, bad loans, a crisis no one saw coming, but it wasn’t. He adamantly denies the ages.” JP Morgan Compliance asks: “What does it say if we’re banking someone investigated for trafficking?” But the bank keeps Epstein.

CHAPTER 3: THE QUIET (November 2006)

FBI Agent Nesbitt Kuyrkendall and prosecutor Marie Villafaña get the Epstein case, and find something else. A woman who reported Epstein to the FBI in 1996. Maria Farmer answers her door in Texas and describes working the front desk at Epstein’s Manhattan mansion—watching “modeling auditions” of girls who looked nothing like models. To understand the greatest heist in history, you have to understand unfettered greed.

Not the garden-variety kind. The voracious appetite that causes an animal to gorge on food until it can’t eat anymore—and yet keeps consuming everything around it. The kind of avarice that doesn’t stop when it’s full. That can’t stop. That won’t stop until there’s nothing left.

It’s in that mindset we find ourselves in the Manhattan of the early 2000s. An orgy of consumption built on something Wall Street called “financial innovation” but was really just predatory lending dressed up in mathematics.

Liar’s loans. Mortgages given to people who couldn’t afford them, with no documentation required, inflated appraisals, hidden fees, teaser rates designed to explode. Sold systematically to working Americans who trusted the system, who believed that if a bank offered them money, they must qualify for it. The evidence shows widespread fraud—incomes and assets routinely overstated, often by loan officers and brokers themselves, making these loans 5 to 8 percentage points more likely to default than fully documented mortgages.

Once these bad loans were made, Wall Street bundled them together and sold them as investments. This let the banks dump the risk onto someone else and go right back to making more bad loans. In fact, Wall Street wanted as many of these toxic mortgages as possible—because they could package them up and sell them for huge fees. The worse the loan, the higher the interest rate, the more money Wall Street made.

The bankers were in on every part of it. When they said something was worth a billion dollars, it was really only worth $57 million—a 17-to-1 ratio built on leverage and lies. When regulators tried to stop them, they replaced the regulators. When that didn’t work, they took over the government.

The hard work, hopes, and dreams of every American family sat on the surface of a balloon, endlessly expanding, until it couldn’t contain the air inside it anymore.

And the bankers knew it. They knew exactly when it would pop. They just wanted one more gorge before it did.

At the center of this feeding frenzy stood a bank named for Joseph A. Bear and Harold C. Mayer: Bear Stearns.

Born as an equity house in 1923, it earned its legendary reputation by somehow miraculously surviving the Great Depression. For 85 years it was the broker of note for some of the shadiest people in Manhattan. Donald Trump. Bear Stearns CEO Ace Greenberg was his personal banker. Robert Maxwell. Leslie Wexner. The Bronfmans. Jeffrey Epstein.

Bear Stearns—like Drexel Burnham Lambert before it—became the home of mortgage-backed securities that fed the 2000s housing boom. Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank—all of them knowingly fed the frenzy. Everything about that boom was fraud. Liars’ loans. Predatory lending. A giant Ponzi scheme where the only way to keep it going was to keep feeding it new victims.

By 2007, it was clear the gorging was coming to an end.

The venerable 85-year-old Bear was clinging to life. But it wouldn’t go quietly. The titans of capitalism weren’t satisfied with decades of endless gorging, cannibalizing hard-working Americans piece by piece. They wanted their last pound of flesh.

The helicopter breaks through low clouds. Wind pushes hard from the east. Below, the Atlantic hammers volcanic cliffs—no gentle Caribbean here, just exposed rock and wild water crashing against stone.

Little Saint James. Seventy-two acres, two miles southeast of St. Thomas in the United States Virgin Islands. Sixteen hundred miles from New York. Epstein bought it in 1998 for $7.95 million. He called it “Little St. Jeff.”

Ghislaine Maxwell keeps one hand steady on the cyclic. Tail number N491GM. The aircraft Epstein bought her (it cost the same as the Island). He insisted her initials be on the tail.

She looked over at her passenger, “Don’t worry Jes. I’ve been flying since I was a teenager “—her father taught her.

Today’s passenger: Jes Staley. JPMorgan executive. Future CEO of Barclays. Epstein’s most trusted friend.

Staley steps off, happy to be on solid ground, just as a gust of wind comes straight off the ocean, pushing him towards the Estate. He’s greeted by Epstein staffer at the foot of the twisty path that leads to the main house—no straight lines here. “Deception requires encryption.” Palm fronds thrash overhead. The pool reflects churning sky. Stone walls keep some of the weather out. Not all of it.

DECEPTION

Inside the study, four overstuffed velvet chairs face inward, as if they still held their last occupants engaged in late-night animated conversation. The room is quiet except for the sound of wind against glass.

And chalk furiously crashing against a chalkboard.

Epstein’s favorite sound. A math teacher at work.

He writes:

“The very idea of survival requires deception,” Epstein says, his eyes still on the blackboard. “It’s biology. Predators deceive. Prey deceive. Even cells deceive each other.”

He pauses. Lets it land.

“People can act as prosthetics. They become extensions of ourselves. Augmenting our cognitive abilities.”

What Kosslyn hears: Fascinating social psychology theory.

What Epstein sees: The operational framework he just mapped on the blackboard, translated into academic language.

“Jeff, you synthesize better than anyone I know,” Kosslyn replies.

“That’s why I’m applying [for the Harvard fellowship], Steven.”

“I’d love to have you here.”

“Well I hope to be accepted.”

Epstein hangs up. He had no business being a prestigious Harvard fellow, yet he was accepted and renewed for a second year.

The blackboard remains behind him. Under INTELLECTUAL, he could write a new name now: Kosslyn. Harvard. Legitimacy acquired.

The algorithm works.

Studio lights. A couch. The morning-soft set of NBC’s Today Show.

Matt Lauer leans forward. The question everyone in America is waiting for.

“Mrs. Clinton—do you believe the allegations are false?”

Hillary Clinton sits across from him. Composed. Coiled. She doesn’t blink.

“The great story here, for anybody willing to find it and write about it and explain it, is this vast right-wing conspiracy that has been conspiring against my husband since the day he announced for president.”

The dress. The stain. The testimony that would come. Kenneth Starr’s four hundred and forty-five pages dissecting every detail of Monica Lewinsky’s life.

For months, the phrase is a joke. Late-night punchlines. Republican mockery. Poor Hillary, defending her cheating husband with paranoid delusions.

Nine years later, Marie Villafaña will understand what Hillary meant.

Late May 2007

Hurricane season. The air in Miami has that heavy, waiting quality—nothing visible yet, but the pressure is off just enough that people who grew up here notice.

“More time for what?”

“To be ‘comfortable.’”

A long pause.

“You’ve got thirty-four victims and Washington’s blessing. Comfortable about what?”

Marie looks at the clear Miami sky. Somewhere east of the Bahamas, the long season is starting.

“I don’t know,” she says. “I don’t know.”

The word moves through the office like electricity.

Marie is returning from the break room when she hears it—two paralegals whispering:

I. MIAMI — NOVEMBER 2006

By the time the file landed on Marie Villafaña’s desk, every meteorologist in Miami had spent months pointing at red swirls.

All summer, the National Hurricane Center had warned that 2006 could be another brutal season—fifteen named storms, eight hurricanes, four major. Local news ran constantly updated graphics: warm sea-surface maps, spaghetti models, close-ups of Cape Verde waves rolling off Africa. People taped their windows in June and never took the tape down.

And then: almost nothing. A tropical storm here. A system that sheared apart there. By November, the ocean looked flat and harmless on TV.

“Quiet season,” the anchors said. “We got lucky.”

In South Florida, anyone who’d spent more than one season knew that “lucky” was another word for “waiting.”

The file didn’t look like much at first. A banker’s box stamped PALM BEACH POLICE DEPARTMENT. Marie pulled the lid off and the stale-paper smell hit her—detectives’ sweat, copier toner, time.

She lifted the top binder and photographs slid out across her desk.

Jeffrey Epstein by a pool. Ghislaine Maxwell in sunglasses. Very young girls. The Manhattan townhouse. The Palm Beach mansion. A Gulfstream on a runway. Another shot: Maxwell with her arm around a girl who looked maybe fifteen, smiling in the stiff way people do when they know something is wrong and don’t have words for it.

“I want you on this one. FBI West Palm is lead—Agent Nesbitt Kuyrkendall. Call her today. Call me after you’ve gone through it.”

He hung up.

Marie picked up the probable cause affidavit. One count: solicitation of prostitution. She flipped to the victim statements.

Fourteen. Fifteen. Sixteen.

The word prostitute repeated where child belonged.

Trash pulls from the Palm Beach house: appointment book pages with names and phone numbers; Detective Joe Recarey’s notes in the margins. Can’t come at 7—soccer practice. Another line: Victim says: “He told her she was too old”—about a 23-year-old.

The pattern was obvious. Recruiters paid $200 for every girl they brought. Girls paid $200 per “massage.” Pool house, massage table, cash.

But that wasn’t the pattern that caught Marie’s attention.

It was the scale. The infrastructure. The way everything had been built to run whether Epstein was there or not—schedulers, recruiters, handlers, each with clear roles and compensation structures. This wasn’t a wealthy man with a problem. This was a system designed for production.

Then she hit the financial section.

International wire transfers. Large, repeated cash withdrawals. Clusters of payments to women overseas. Palm Beach detectives had flagged them, but their notes trailed off—possible laundering? no resources to follow up.

July 25, 2006. Wednesday morning.

Jeffrey Epstein squinted as the morning light tore through his dreams. For a split second he’d forgotten what was coming. His attorneys had negotiated the terms. He would turn himself in. The charges would be read. Bond would be posted. He would be home on the Upper East Side by dinner.

The drive to Palm Beach County Jail took twenty minutes down South Ocean Boulevard with a right turn at Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort. They were best friends. It was Trump who had overshared with New York Magazine that Epstein was “a terrific guy” who liked women “on the younger side.”

The friendship had soured two years earlier over a competing bid to purchase a Palm Beach mansion. It had crossed Epstein’s mind that his old friend had betrayed him to authorities, but he couldn’t prove it.

The booking process at Palm Beach County Jail: fingerprints, photographs, paperwork. Charges read aloud by the clerk: felony solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors to engage in prostitution.

Detective Joe Recarey stood in the back of the room. He’d spent eighteen months building this case. Many of the colleagues on the case reported being trailed by Epstein’s private investigators - some had impersonated officers to intimidate witnesses. One was told: Rewards for silence. Consequences for testimony.

Bond set at $3,000.

Epstein posted it. Cash.

Within the hour, he walked out.

The arrest made immediate news. New York Times. Wall Street Journal. Wire services picked it up. “Billionaire money manager Jeffrey Epstein charged with soliciting underage prostitutes.”

By the time Epstein returned home to New York that night, JPMorgan Chase’s Global Corporate Security Division had already red-flagged his account.

II. 9 East 71St Street, Manhattan

“Who is it?” a voice boomed through the intercom outside Epstein’s townhome—the house Les Wexner gifted him.

“It’s Jes.”

Jes Staley was the definition of a company man. He had been with JPMorgan since 1979 and was now CEO of the bank’s Asset and Wealth Management division. They’d known each other for years. Staley had helped make Epstein richer and Epstein kept Staley’s division profitable. By 2003, Epstein was the top revenue generator in the Private Bank—$8.1 million annually, nearly double the next highest client, and attracting the likes of Sergey Brin to the bank, who parked over $4 billion at the bank.

By 2006, Staley and Epstein had developed a friendship that ran far deeper than banking.

Close enough that Staley visited Epstein’s private island. Close enough that Staley would later call him “boss” in emails. Close enough that, years later in 2012—four years after Epstein’s conviction—they would exchange emails where Epstein wrote “To my most cherished friend, Jes” and Staley would reply with a single word: “family.”

When Epstein opened the door, the look on his face startled Staley—he’d never seen his friend like this. He gave him a hug and went inside.

They talked about the charges. The evidence. What came next.

Epstein admitted that he had engaged in sex with multiple young women for money. He only denied they were under the age of consent.

III. 270 Park Avenue, Manhattan

As she did most mornings, Mary Erdoes strode into JPMorgan’s headquarters the next morning at 7:30 AM.

From the unfinished steps of his estate, Les Wexner stared into it. Fifty-seven years old. The undisputed king of Ohio—Victoria’s Secret, The Limited, Bath & Body Works. An empire built on understanding what American women wanted to buy and what American men wanted to see.

But his latest project was collapsing.

New Albany—ten thousand acres carved from cornfields. A gated enclave for the rich, white, and powerful—where people like him wouldn’t have to live among people who weren’t. Where democracy stayed outside the gates.

But the financing had fallen apart. His previous lawyer had met an untimely end in what one local newspaper called a mob hit. Then the police chief misplaced the case files.

Wexner needed someone with a knack for handling money - even if it wasn’t always lawful.

Jeffrey Epstein entered Wexner’s life in 1986, at a party in New York. Five years later, Wexner granted him power of attorney over his personal fortune.

Now 37 years old, Epstein was a regular fixture around Wexner. Some whispered boyfriend. Others said protégé. Heir apparent.

Nobody quite knew where he came from. Nobody understood what he did but he had earned Wexner’s complete trust.

Epstein had a history of breaking the rules. He’d left Bear Stearns after violating regulations for his client Edgar Bronfman—a Wexner friend. He’d pulled off a Ponzi scheme at Towers Financial that sent Steve Hoffenberg to prison for eighteen years and disappeared $450 million.

If anyone knew how to game the system, it was Jeffrey Epstein. And now, he was gathering the people who could fix Wexner’s latest problem, New Albany.

Jack Kessler was one of Ohio’s most connected lawyers. When Wexner stepped down from the Banc One (later renamed Bank One) board in 1991, he named Kessler his successor. Kessler was a partner in New Albany.

Bank One—the McCoy family’s empire—had backed New Albany from the start. The financing had become what lawyers delicately called “a total mess.”

Over three years, the mess was mysteriously cleaned up. Debt restructured. Development accelerated. Money flowed in through untraceable shell companies that attracted no regulatory attention.

And as New Albany emerged from the fog of the Ohio River, Jeffrey Epstein’s power grew.

In 1996, Wexner installed Epstein in an executive office at The Limited’s headquarters—Three Limited Parkway in Columbus. Epstein was calling the shots at The Limited, including spinning off Abercrombie & Fitch (whose founders are also embroiled in a human trafficking scandal).

During that IPO, JPMorgan dispatched an equities banker named Jes Staley to Columbus. In a recently unsealed statement, Staley acknowledged this first meeting with Epstein—years earlier than their previously reported initial meeting in 2000 when Staley took over JP Morgan Chase’s private banking division.

Their client relationship quickly turned into a friendship that lasted 20 years.

Official State filings listed Jeffrey Epstein and Les Wexner as co-presidents of the New Albany Company in 1998, Kessler became chairman and simultaneously took on a special project in his capacity as a Bank One board member: finding a new CEO for the bank.

The alarm bell is ringing from a place most Americans have never heard of: the Federal Reserve’s “repo market,” short for repurchase agreements. This is Wall Street’s emergency liquidity room, where banks go overnight to borrow cash when they’re short. Think of it as the lender of last resort for the institutions that hold the global economy together.

What’s happening in that room right now should worry everyone.

Over the last few weeks, banks have started bringing mortgage-backed securities—not U.S. Treasuries—as collateral to borrow from the Fed. That might seem like an obscure technical shift. It isn’t. Treasuries are the safest asset in the world—clean, trusted, easy to value. Mortgage-backed securities, by contrast, are debt instruments tied to homeowners—some of whom are now facing missed payments, job cuts, or vanished government assistance. For a bank to bring in a bundle of home loans instead of Treasuries means one of two things: either they’re running out of the good stuff, or they’re holding back for fear of what’s next. Neither bodes well.

By October 31st, banks had borrowed over $50 billion from the Fed in a single day—nearly half of it using mortgage debt as collateral. That isn’t routine liquidity. That’s a quiet scramble for cash.

And all of it is unfolding while the market itself shows signs of deep fracture. The spread between what buyers are willing to pay and what sellers are asking—the “bid-ask spread”—is now at record levels in sectors like real estate and credit markets. That’s a critical indicator. When buyers and sellers can’t agree on value, price discovery breaks down. In plain terms, no one knows what anything is really worth. This dislocation is what preceded the 2008 collapse. It’s what precedes all collapses.

The US$ Decline

But unlike 2008, the geopolitical backdrop today is a tinderbox. The U.S. dollar, once unquestioned as the global reserve, is under coordinated assault. China and Russia are trading in local currencies. BRICS nations are exploring alternatives. American debt is being offloaded by allies and rivals alike. Trust is eroding—not just in the currency, but in the entire postwar economic order it props up.

And into this void is flooding capital—from hedge funds, pension money, retail investors—toward cryptocurrency. Bitcoin is surging. Ethereum is climbing. Not because of innovation, but because of desperation. The traditional system feels rigged, fragile, unsustainable. In this environment, crypto is not just a speculative asset—it’s a lifeboat.

Court documents unsealed on October 31st reveal something that transforms our understanding of Jeffrey Epstein. Between 2009 and 2010, while he was a registered sex offender, Epstein provided detailed strategic advice to JPMorgan Chase executives on China market expansion. Then those same executives—including Jes Staley, CEO of JPMorgan’s Investment Bank—reported back to him about meetings with some of China’s most powerful officials.

It’s not every day a major US bank consults with a convicted child abuser about relations at the highest level of the Communist Party, but it’s a key piece of evidence we found in a tranche of just unsealed Epstein files.

In the emails, Epstein functions more like an intelligence handler than a billionaire investment advisor. In October 2009, Epstein sent Staley a multi-paragraph memo on China strategy. The guidance covered entity structure for Chinese markets, regulatory navigation, cultural protocols, and government relations. Epstein wrote about “face-saving” in Chinese culture, how to approach Treasury officials, and the importance of demonstrating long-term commitment through “demonstration projects” rather than just proposals. He advised creating “a dedicated China entity, with its own board of advisors” that would have “independent oversight” while respecting Chinese cultural sensitivities.

This is the kind of advice that comes from people with deep access to Chinese government decision-making. Not from money managers or hedge fund operators. From intelligence operatives, senior consultants with decades of China experience, or geopolitical strategists with connections to officials who actually run things.

Then came the payoff. In September 2010, Staley sent Epstein an email reporting on his progress. The subject line alone tells you everything about their dynamic: Staley wasn’t just sharing news with a friend. He was debriefing a handler.

“And just had the most senior meeting JPM has had save for Jamie meeting with Wang Qishan,” Staley wrote. “I spent almost 2 hours with Minister Li Yuanchao of the Organization Department. He will be in the next group and will come in ‘11.”

Minister Li Yuanchao wasn’t some mid-level trade official. In 2010, he controlled the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China—the personnel office that decides every senior appointment in government, military, and state-owned enterprises. He was a member of the Politburo. He later became Vice President of China. Meeting with the Minister of the Organization Department means getting access to succession planning, factional politics, and the most sensitive personnel decisions in the Chinese government.

Staley mentioned that only Jamie Dimon had met with someone more senior—Vice Premier Wang Qishan, who oversaw China’s response to the 2008 financial crisis. This was the absolute top level of the Chinese government. And Staley felt compelled to tell Epstein about it, in detail, including what would happen next.

October 2009: Epstein provides a strategy. September 2010: Staley implements it and reports back. This is how intelligence handlers work with assets. The handler briefs an assignment, the asset executes the mission, and the asset debriefs the handler.

How did Epstein acquire expertise in Chinese government structure, cultural protocols, and regulatory navigation? Who briefed him? What access did he have to Chinese decision-makers? And what did he do with the information Staley provided about meetings with officials who controlled China’s entire leadership pipeline?

The Israeli Intelligence Connection

An obvious source of this operational detail is Israeli Military Intelligence. Epstein worked for Aman, which perhaps explains why Epstein introduced Staley to former Israeli PM Ehud Barak.

According to Ari Ben-Menashe, a former Israeli intelligence operative, Robert Maxwell introduced Epstein to Israeli military intelligence in the early 1980s.

The Barak-Staley-Epstein triangle wasn’t a typical bank-customer relationship. Newly obtained emails from September 2013 show the connection remained active years after Epstein’s conviction—and even after Staley left JPMorgan.

On September 18, 2013, Staley’s assistant at his new hedge fund contacted Lesley Groff—Epstein’s longtime assistant—to schedule a meeting between Staley and Ehud Barak, the former Israeli Prime Minister and Defense Minister.

One week later, Barak emailed Staley directly: “7:45 a.m. (in 25 min) at The Club on the 57th fl. (roof top). I’ve already ordered a table for two.” The casual coordination reveals an established relationship. More significant: Staley coordinated the meeting through Epstein’s infrastructure—even as JPMorgan was terminating Epstein’s accounts under regulatory pressure that same year.

This pattern extended across multiple countries and persisted for years after Epstein’s conviction.
