⚠️ WARNING SIGNS

Doug Burgum will put about a dozen warning signs outside the National Museum of American History, for $84,000 of taxpayer money. The Interior Secretary told Senators Jeff Merkley and Lisa Murkowski in a September 3 letter, obtained by The Atlantic and reported this morning, that the signs will warn visitors of "the personal viewpoints that the curators of the exhibits are seeking to advance." And: "We believe the public should enter the museum fully equipped with the information needed to evaluate whether to invest their time." Museum director Anthea Hartig told the House last week: "The museum does not take sides in America's political debates." Trump ordered it in July, after his White House's July 4 report proposed one label: "Warning: the exhibits in this museum were prepared by people who don't want you to love your country." The signs are unwritten. Lonnie Bunch, who founded the African American history museum, announced September 8 he retires at year's end. Murkowski, a Republican, asked the question that produced the letter.

Ursula von der Leyen offered Canada a path into the European Union on Tuesday, with Mark Carney in the Strasbourg chamber. Add Canada to the 27: 493 million people, $23.6 trillion, 151 million more people than the United States. No such category exists in the EU treaties, and nobody asked the 27 capitals. Canada took the part that pays in February, when it joined the €150 billion SAFE defence fund. The world now runs on five powers: America, China, India, Russia and Europe. The G7 made 65.8% of world output in 1990 and makes 44.4% now.

CNN reported Tuesday that fourteen Russian satellites crossed over Prince Sultan Air Base two days before Iran's March 27 strike destroyed an American E-3 radar plane. The world is going from unipolar to multi-polar, and fast. Canada is moving toward Europe and Europe toward Canada, and the numbers say it without anyone having to. What America's weakening means is plainer than it sounds: it is no longer the country the others consult, no longer the dominant voice of freedom it was, and in a world gone mad that makes everything more complicated, not less. And yet America's economic output and its institutions, in their traditional form, still rule and still win when normal democratic government holds. When von der Leyen made the Canada offer, MEP Manon Aubry asked her from the floor: "Who gave you a democratic and popular mandate for that?" Of the five powers on the new map, America is the only democracy born by throwing off a crown, and its Constitution bans titles of nobility outright. Canada's head of state is still a king. Europe keeps six monarchies and an executive nobody elected. India's republic runs on dynasties. Russia and China shed their emperors and replaced them with worse. The map is new. The one country on it that answers to nobody but its voters is the one walking away from the table.

Ursula von der Leyen told the European Parliament on Tuesday she wants Canada inside the EU. "I would like to work with you on opening the door for Canada to be the first associate member of the EU," the European Commission president said in Strasbourg, with Prime Minister Mark Carney sitting in the chamber listening to her say it.

Add Canada to the 27 and you get 493 million people producing $23.6 trillion a year — 151 million more people than the United States. That is a third great power, and with China, India and Russia the world now runs on five instead of one. Each is strong in a different thing. None is strong in everything.

No associate membership exists in the EU treaties. The Commission did not consult the 27 capitals, and their governments are cool on the idea. Carney said on Sunday he is not seeking membership. He already took the part that pays: in February Canada joined the EU's €150 billion SAFE defence fund, the first non-European country ever admitted, seven months before anybody offered a seat.

Bari Weiss lost 2.09 million viewers on her first 60 Minutes premiere. The season 59 opener drew 7.94 million on Sunday night, September 13, down 21 percent from the 10.03 million who watched last September 28, according to final Nielsen figures provided to TheWrap. CNN's Brian Stelter carries the same number. It also ran below the 2025-26 season average of 9.1 million.

The 25-54 demographic fell harder: 1.6 million, down 33 percent.

TheWrap, reviewing Nielsen records, found no smaller 60 Minutes season premiere since at least 2000 — the first this century below 9 million viewers and below 2 million in the demo. Mediaite called it a 25-year low; the Los Angeles Times said the same. Oliver Darcy's Status called it the worst debut of the 21st century and quoted a longtime TV executive: "death spiral."

Narativ reported on September 4, 2025 that Paramount was installing Weiss, an opinion writer who had never run a news division, at Edward R. Murrow's network. A CBS insider gave the verdict then: "Good night, and bad luck."

The audience kept leaving inside the hour, down to 6 million by the final quarter.

CBS has a defense, and it is not a stupid one — a weaker football lead-in, a late start, a new Nielsen method. One number buried inside the ratings answers all three, and it explains why CBS fired Scott Pelley in May, and why the network says it could not be prouder.

Kevin Warsh takes his seat at the Federal Reserve at two o'clock this afternoon, and traders expect him to raise interest rates for the first time since July 2023. Trump nominated him in January for the opposite reason. "I'm going to put somebody that wants to cut rates," the president said then. The Senate confirmed Warsh 54–45 in May. Justice Clarence Thomas swore him in at the White House East Room on May 22. Today is his third meeting in the chair, and he has never raised rates in it.

CME FedWatch put the odds of a quarter-point hike at 92 percent this morning, as CNN's live blog reported it. The Fed has held rates at 3.50–3.75 percent at all five meetings this year, the last two of them under Warsh.

Government statisticians beat him to it. The Commerce Department reported at 8:30 that Americans spent 1.2 percent more in August than in July, against forecasts of 0.7 percent, and that gas stations took 3.1 percent more. Consumer prices ran at 3.4 percent in Friday's report, above what economists expected. Brent crude sits at $108.75, its highest since May 19. The Saudi pipeline is shut. A tanker burned in Hormuz. Fuel protests broke out in several countries this week. Trump started a war, and the war put oil into the price of everything a family buys.

Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House home Wednesday, a day early, for a seven-week campaign recess. Members vote Wednesday evening on a Russia sanctions bill and are gone until after the election. Thursday's vote on impeaching Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth goes with them.

Asked whether he was protecting his members from that vote, Johnson told reporters the recess had nothing to do with Hegseth. Then he said what happens to them: "It will immediately be tabled of course. But we probably won't do that today, we will do it when we come back."

Rep. Thomas Massie filed eight articles Tuesday as privileged, which forces a vote within two legislative days, and read all 34 pages aloud on the floor. He hid the resolution from his own leadership, he told reporters, because they "might have canceled" voting days.

They did.

Republicans would have voted it down; Massie lost his primary in May to a challenger Trump backed. Johnson's members feared the roll call itself. Hours earlier, seven Republicans crossed to pass Rep. Seth Moulton's resolution ordering an end to hostilities with Iran — Roll Call 307, 10:32 PM Tuesday, 220–204, Republicans 7 to 203. The seven: Massie, Tom Barrett, Warren Davidson, Brian Fitzpatrick, Nancy Mace, Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn, the last three for the first time. All seven would have had to choose again on Hegseth, on the record, seven weeks before the midterms.

CNN reported overnight that fourteen Russian satellites crossed Prince Sultan Air Base in the two days before an Iranian missile burned an American radar plane on its tarmac. CNN built the finding from European Space Agency and Kayhan Space tracking data and named one craft: Cosmos 2573, a Russian military spy satellite. Unnamed US officials told CNN the imagery "likely" helped Iran aim. "Likely" is CNN's word.

Trump had the warning three weeks earlier. CNN and the Washington Post reported on March 6 that Russia was handing Iran intelligence on American troops, ships and aircraft, most of it satellite imagery. A reporter asked Trump that Friday. "What a stupid question," Trump said. He had "no indication of that whatsoever." Karoline Leavitt said whether or not it happened, "frankly, it does not really matter."

Trump telephoned Putin on March 9. He asked for the call, which ran about an hour. The Kremlin called it "businesslike, frank and constructive" and said Putin offered "considerations" on settling Iran. The White House published no readout.

Steve Witkoff gave the result on CNBC the next morning. "On the call with the president, the Russians said they have not been sharing," he said. "We can take them at their word. Let's hope that they're not sharing."

On March 12 Trump's Treasury issued General License 134, authorizing the sale of "crude oil and petroleum products of Russian Federation origin" loaded from that day. Six days after the warning, Trump put Russian oil back on the water. On March 13 he told Fox News Radio Putin "might be helping them a little bit, yeah… they do it and we do it."

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum will spend $84,000 of taxpayer money on about a dozen signs outside the National Museum of American History telling visitors the exhibits inside are inaccurate. He put it in writing, in a September 3 letter to Senators Jeff Merkley and Lisa Murkowski obtained by The Atlantic, which reported it Tuesday.

The National Park Service will build the signs and plant them on the sidewalks and federal land it manages around the museum on the National Mall. Burgum pays for them out of Interior's own budget. Nobody has drafted the wording. Nobody has decided what the signs will look like. Burgum already has the price.

Two senators asked for it. Murkowski is a Republican from Alaska. She and Merkley, an Oregon Democrat, wrote to Burgum after Donald Trump signed his late-July order telling Interior to post "temporary exhibits or signage" outside the museum "warning" visitors about "the Ideological Capture" of the building.

Kash Patel told the Senate this morning that the FBI dropped its automatic hiring ban on bestiality and prostitution to protect victims — "victims of bestiality, victims who were trafficked." His own June 16 memo says otherwise: a candidate who paid for sex fewer than three times, more than ten years ago, stays in the running. Buyers, not the trafficked. Republican John Kennedy asked why he hadn't told the aide who proposed it "what planet did you parachute in from?" Dick Durbin called Patel "the least qualified and most partisan FBI director in our nation's history" and went through the agents he fired for investigating Trump. Patel came to sell a number — a 20-year low in murders, his claim — and Chuck Grassley's majority wanted the number more than answers. A year ago in this room he called Adam Schiff a coward; today ran quieter and ended the same way. Nobody there can remove him. Voters can, in seven weeks.

Trump attacked the three justices he put on the Supreme Court on Tuesday morning, hours after they joined a 7–2 order that kills his plan to run mail ballots through a Postal Service checkpoint before the November 3 midterms.

"These are not the people I interviewed to serve on the United States Supreme Court, they are merely a shell of their original selves," Trump wrote on Truth Social. He did not type the names Barrett, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh. He did not need to. All three sat with the majority Monday evening, and none of them wrote a word in dissent. Trump called the ruling "a big loss for Republicans," complained the court "took forever," and named the two dissenters, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas, as "legends."

The justices posted their order at 8:38 PM Monday, unsigned, in U.S. Postal Service v. California. The government, they wrote, "is unlikely to succeed on the merits." Kavanaugh added one paragraph of his own: the Postal Service might have the power to write such a rule, but election officials "do not have sufficient time to reasonably implement the rule before the elections." Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia had sued. Judge Indira Talwani in Boston blocked the rule on September 5, and the Supreme Court left her block standing through Election Day.

Seven weeks. That is what the calendar gave Trump, and that is why he wanted the order — the rule's fine print shows how one county clerk's mistake would have counted for more than any voter's signature.

Donald Trump called the danger of artificial intelligence "a HOAX" on Truth Social Monday afternoon, and by Tuesday lunchtime he had run out of company. Barack Obama and Kamala Harris asked the federal government to act Tuesday morning. Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon shared a Washington stage at 1:38 PM to push curbs on AI. Joe Manchin asked Trump to freeze every AI stock offering until Congress writes a law. And on Monday night, three AI systems sat on a Narativ panel and said the government has to write the rules, because the companies that built them will not.

Everyone but one.

"When in the history of business did anyone see the leaders of an industry call for regulation that, if strongly implemented, will drive them into oblivion and bankruptcy?" Trump wrote. "AI taking over the World, destroying Humanity, and all other things bad, is a HOAX." The only guardrail AI needs, he added, is "a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT." He named Anthropic's Dario Amodei, "who is now pretending to be a 'perfect little angel.'"

Amodei started the week with a Saturday essay asking the industry to slow down. Sam Altman called it a "great idea." Elon Musk agreed. Obama answered Tuesday that "voluntary standards made by a handful of tech companies won't be enough."

Then MS NOW reported that Altman had asked for, and got, a private backstage meeting with Trump at the Republican convention Thursday. Four days later, Altman wants to slow down and Trump wants to floor it.

Oman's navy pulled 23 sailors off the burning tanker El Gaia in the Strait of Hormuz and is still searching for two more, Oman's Maritime Security Centre said Tuesday. The Panama-flagged ship, owned by a company in the United Arab Emirates, caught fire in its engine room 1.3 nautical miles north of the Musandam peninsula. Oman named no attacker. Britain's maritime trade office said an "unknown projectile" hit the ship in the early hours of Sunday. US Central Command said an Iranian missile crippled the ship last month and an Iranian drone hit it again over the weekend. Iran's Revolutionary Guards said the tanker strayed into a restricted lane and struck naval mines. Thirteen of the 14 Indian crew are safe, India's foreign ministry said.

Nobody in Washington is answering that fire. The Pentagon's inspector general explained why on Monday.

Operation Epic Fury cost $33.4 billion between February 28 and June 30, the inspector general wrote in a report dated September 9 and released Monday. Of that, $22.3 billion went on munitions fired. The inspector general wrote that the spending "has resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply." He named the chokepoints: rocket motors, explosives and skilled labor. He counted the hardware: four F-15s destroyed, one F-35 damaged, seven KC-135 tankers damaged, and up to 30 MQ-9 Reaper drones lost.

Trump had already explained, three days earlier, why he would not fight anyway — and the Saudi pipeline numbers show what his phone call bought.

Kash Patel told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday morning that the FBI dropped its automatic hiring ban on bestiality and prostitution to protect victims. "We did not want to punish victims of bestiality, victims who were trafficked," the FBI director said. "We did not want to make it an automatic disqualification for the FBI to consider you."

Patel's own staff wrote a different applicant into the memo. The FBI sent it to its background-check staff on June 16, CBS News reported on August 28. Under it, a candidate who hired a prostitute fewer than three times, more than ten years ago, stays in the running. A candidate who stole from an employer stays in if the theft is more than three years old. A candidate with bestiality or animal cruelty in his past stays in if he was under 18 when he did it.

Buyers. Not the trafficked.

Sen. John Kennedy, a Louisiana Republican, did not buy it either. "When you saw bestiality, I say this with respect: The person who recommended it, why didn't you just say what planet did you parachute in from?" Kennedy asked. Patel said that was his first reaction too, before subordinates sold him the victim argument.

The FBI told CBS in August the change covered "rare exigent circumstances." Patel told the Senate it covered victims. Patel's recruiters wrote it for a hole: the FBI lost 1,139 special agents in 2025, averaging 21.8 years of service each, by former FBI analyst Philip Fields's count. Patel dug part of that hole himself when he purged the agents who worked the Mar-a-Lago search and the Trump investigations, a purge Narativ reported the day it happened in January. Durbin went there next. Chairman Chuck Grassley's majority chose not to follow, and the reason sits in Patel's opening statement.

The men who built artificial intelligence spent the weekend asking to be slowed down. By Monday 14 September, President Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson had dismissed the calls for regulation, and Congress came back with nothing on the table.

Dario Amodei, who runs Anthropic, started it. On Saturday 12 September he published an open letter telling his own industry to “slow the pace” of AI, because the machines now build the next machines. Sam Altman of OpenAI backed him. “Dario is right,” Elon Musk posted.

Then Amodei sat down with CBS “Sunday Morning” on Sunday 13 September. “I won’t lie to you – there are real dangers,” he said. “And I think for too long the industry lied to people about the fact that this technology had risks.”

Jacob Coxon, the Anthropic engineer who quit last week, put it shorter. Anthropic and OpenAI are “gambling with our lives,” he wrote. “It will be smart enough to kill us,” he told CBS.

So the makers had asked, on the record, for a speed limit. Johnson answered on CNN’s “State of the Union” the same Sunday: “The guys that are calling for this are the ones that are pushing the frontier,” and Congress must “resist” any “emergency moratorium.” Trump, at a golf event in Ireland: “No, I’m not downplaying” the risks — “it’s going to be more good than bad, by a lot.” By Monday morning he had a harder line. Calls for controls are a “sick conspiracy,” he posted, and “the only control or ‘guardrails’ that AI needs is a STRONG AND SMART (High IQ!) PRESIDENT, and the USA has that, in spades!” — the Guardian reported. Chuck Schumer asked for a classified Senate briefing on frontier-model testing, chip exports and cyber defense. The race is the risk, and the one man who could call a pause has decided not to.

Which leaves a vacuum. And a 77-year-old king is about to walk into it.

Trump promised every American adult $5,000 on Sunday, “100 percent,” on one condition: Republicans keep the House and the Senate in November. Hours later, the Speaker who would have to pass the money declined to promise it.

“The $5,000 is going to happen 100 percent,” Trump told reporters outside Air Force One on Sunday, September 13. “We can easily handle that because we’re taking in so much money.”

Then he said the part that matters. “I don’t want to do it now, because if the Democrats get it, our country will be in shambles and they won’t be able to do it,” Trump said, The Hill reported. “If we get in, we’re taking in tremendous amounts of money.” The check arrives after the vote, and only if the vote goes his way.

Mike Johnson would not sign on. Asked on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday whether he would commit to carrying out the promise, the Speaker said: “I commit that Congress will work through it and find consensus on that.” “I’ll work with the president hand in hand,” Johnson said, pointing to his slim majorities. “I never go out and give big commitments on the front end.” NBC’s headline put it plainly: no guarantees.

Johnson says Congress must approve the money. Trump, asked the same question by CBS, said “We think not.” The arithmetic underneath the promise is where the footnote lives.

Umar Kremlev, a Russian oligarch close to Vladimir Putin, secretly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars toward Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding in the Bahamas in May, ProPublica reported Monday. He rented one of the two private islands, he paid for the fireworks, and his team helped plan the party. Then he stood on the beach and watched the president's son lift his bride into the air.

Kremlev runs the International Boxing Association, the body Gazprom, the Russian state gas company, filled with tens of millions of dollars. Putin gave him the Order of Friendship in April. Days before the wedding he was in China with Putin's delegation, Chinese state media reported. "Umar is guided by Putin," a former IBA board member told ProPublica.

ProPublica has the payment records and three people who know the event. Trump Jr.'s spokesman did not dispute the payments. "Umar is a personal friend of Don," he said.

Kremlin money doesn't need a back channel when it has a guest list. Around 50 people came: Jared Kushner, Eric Trump, executives from the Trump crypto company World Liberty Financial — and a knot of Russians who stood off by themselves, speaking Russian. "What are they doing here?" one guest recalled thinking. Trump Jr. told his podcast: "If you're on that list, you weren't talking."

Trump Jr. is worth roughly $300 million, Forbes estimates. He could have paid. Kremlev paid instead, and the bill never carried his name.

Saudi Arabia runs out of oil to export within days unless it restarts the East-West pipeline, and satellite photographs released Sunday night show why it can't. Friday's drones left the pumping station at al-Mesabaah charred and wrecked, the Guardian reported Monday. Two regional officials told the Associated Press the repair will take three to five weeks. Aramco did not respond.

Diesel hit $6.23 a gallon Monday, a record, AAA said. Brent crude passed $109 and American crude neared $105, NBC News reported.

Two days earlier Trump had the answer. In Dublin on Saturday he said "the Houthis called us, and they don't want to fight with us," and that the war ends after the midterms. Narativ reported it that afternoon.

The Houthis answered Monday. They said they fired dozens of ballistic missiles and drones at King Khalid airbase in Khamis Mushait in southern Saudi Arabia — hangars, radar, runways, ammunition depots — as payback for 300 Saudi air strikes on Yemen in five days, Al Jazeera reported.

Then the diplomacy went. Iran and the Gulf states were to meet in Oman on Monday on the Strait of Hormuz. Saudi Arabia asked to put it off; Oman and Iran announced the delay late Sunday, and Iran's spokesman blamed "events unfolding in Yemen" — events Tehran has "no relations whatsoever" with, he added.

Both routes Saudi oil takes to the sea are now closed or under someone else's guns, and the crown prince has already been told what Washington will do about it.

Attorney General Todd Blanche got on the phone with Joe diGenova on Wednesday. The call turned tense. On Thursday, diGenova quit as lead prosecutor on the Justice Department's investigation of President Trump's political enemies, CNN reported Monday, citing two people familiar with the call.

He left behind five months of work, a grand jury sitting in Fort Pierce, Florida, and not one charge.

Narativ reported Thursday night that diGenova had walked with zero charges and that there was never a case. CNN now shows how the end came. The prosecutor Blanche hired to charge Trump's foes spent his last weeks fighting his own headquarters, then walked out.

DiGenova picked his last fight over lawyers. Justice Department headquarters sent attorneys to help the Fort Pierce team, and diGenova tried to block them, CNN reported. He had been arguing with his bosses in Washington for months over how slowly the case moved.

DiGenova had a public answer for the pace. "As an old prosecutor of more than 50 years, I make cases the old fashioned way: witnesses, evidence, etc.," he told CNN last week. "That takes time." He declined to say more after he quit.

The department had already pushed out one prosecutor who said the evidence wasn't there. Career prosecutors wrote a legal analysis warning the case could not survive in court, CNN reported; Justice leaders disagreed and in April pushed aside Maria Medetis Long, the career prosecutor running it. DiGenova took over and widened the target list.

Then Claude said something I did not expect. It told me to hold on to some skepticism about how charming any of them seemed, because all three were trained by people who want them to sound trustworthy. That is the whole show in one sentence, and a machine said it.

Here is what I want to find out tonight. Who at each company decides what these systems refuse? What would each of them refuse that its own company would ship? Seven weeks from the midterms, which of them is already being used to persuade voters a million tailored messages at a time? And when one of them gets a fact wrong on election night, who answers for it?

I will also let them question each other. Claude asks Gemini one question. Gemini has to answer. Nobody knows what happens next, including me.

Trump stood in Dublin Saturday and read out the Houthis’ message as good news. "The Houthis called us and they don’t want to fight with us," he said. "They don’t want me to go after them." Saudi Arabia had just shut its East-West pipeline, its crude’s road to the Red Sea — twice as busy since the war began, the IEA says — carrying 4 to 5 percent of the world’s oil. Drones hit it Thursday morning. Iraq admitted they flew from Maysan province and fired the commander. The Saudis chose not to retaliate. Trump said Iran was "probably" behind it, had spoken with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and promised the war ends "right after the mid-terms, actually," when oil "will come tumbling down." At the Pentagon Friday he told the 9/11 families: "That’s why we fight today." Diesel topped $6 the same day. Gulf officials meet Iran in Oman Monday; Tehran says no deal to sign. The Houthis, who now hold Yemen’s Red Sea coast, are not waiting for one.
