🗳️ THE POSTAL SERVICE DEFIED A JUDGE'S ORDER ON BALLOTS
Postmaster General David Steiner finished the federal ballot rule at nine o'clock Friday night, ten days after Judge Indira Talwani ordered him by name not to finish it. She put it on page 27: Steiner may not initiate or complete this rulemaking. His agency completed it anyway — ninety-five pages, effective that night, and not due in the Federal Register until August 26, five days after it began binding people who cannot read it yet. Steiner printed the reason on the front page. Delay, the rule says, "would jeopardize implementation of this rule in time for the 2026 general election." That is Talwani's election, the one her order covers. Weeks earlier, government lawyers told her they were "unable to publish a final rule because of this court's injunction." Then they published. Twenty-three states and the District of Columbia are suing. States start mailing ballots in September, seventy-three days before November 3.
🎖️ DRISCOLL IS EXPECTED TO RESIGN. THE ARMY HAS NO CHIEF EITHER
The Wall Street Journal reported Friday night that Army Secretary Dan Driscoll is expected to quit before the year is out. Driscoll told the Washington Post in April, on the record, that he had no plans to leave. His family has already moved out of the official residence to North Carolina. Nobody in the administration denied the story. Pete Hegseth fired the Army's chief of staff, Gen. Randy George, by telephone on 2 April in under a minute, and Trump has named nobody since. Both of the Army's top jobs are emptying in the middle of a war.
💵 BESSENT TRIED TO RESCUE THE BOND MARKET. IT FAILED
Scott Bessent promised Wednesday to double the Treasury's purchases of America's own debt — buying government bonds back with cash to push interest rates down. Rates fell. By Friday investors had shoved them back where they started. The thirty-year rate hit 5.34% this week, the highest since 2007, and the debt passed $40 trillion. Kevin Warsh's Fed held rates last month; all three dissenters wanted them higher. Trump picked the chairman and never got the cut.
🇨🇦 THE TRADE TALKS COLLAPSED. TRUMP TAXED CANADA 50%
Trump imposed 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian goods Saturday, hours after the talks collapsed. Mark Carney says Canada will tax American goods back, dollar for dollar. Narativ reported on 19 August that Trump's Canada deal did not exist; three days later he let the tariff land. Carney is the first G7 leader to refuse him and keep refusing.
🏛️ ROBERTS CLEARED THE BALLROOM CONGRESS NEVER FUNDED
Chief Justice John Roberts signed one sentence Friday night, and Trump's crews are back Monday. He froze the order that stopped them and explained nothing. Trump had a second ballroom approved in New Jersey the same day.
🎯 THE BIGGER PICTURE
They stopped waiting for permission. Steiner finished a rule a judge had forbidden him to finish, and told the court afterward. Hegseth emptied both of the Army's top jobs and has left them empty through a war. Bessent started buying the debt back out of his own department because Warsh's Fed will not cut the rate Trump wants. Roberts froze the order that had stopped the ballroom and gave no reason at all.
Nobody asked.
Every one of these men holds a job that exists because someone else signs off — a judge, a confirmation vote, an appropriation, a rate decision. This week they all worked around the signature. The First Circuit has Talwani's order in front of it. Kevin Warsh's committee meets on 16 September. Those are the rooms left where somebody still has to ask.

If absent a coherent military, countries that consider the US their enemy were to attack us, and if we were not able to mount a coherent defense against that, I suspect that the MAGAs who follow Trump would be rethinking their choices. Why? Because the economy and the other actions of Trump might seem invisible, but your home being bombed is not.
In fact, if you only understand the most concrete of connections, having to spend your night with a tornado like attack of bombs would certainly make you think that you wanted a government who did not just pretend, but did real things. However, this is fortunately not likely to happen. Hybrid war is more insidious and will continue to be practiced and the concrete learners in the voting age population will understanding nothing about the threat to our security that having such a shitshow of a leadership in the military puts us in.
