What Trump wants in Canada is the Arctic. Narativ has been sounding the alarm since 2019: Russia, China and the United States under Trump all want control of the Arctic, the geopolitical prize of the century, and a democratic Canada is in their way. Everything else is a pressure point. The tariffs. The insults. The treaties he calls illegitimate. And now the water.

On 27 August he signed an executive order renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America." Inside it he wrote this: "With the deepest parts of the Lake's waters lying within United States territory, the United States claims most of the Lake's volume."

Then he listed what the water gives him. It's the cooling water for the nuclear, gas and oil-fired power plants on the shore. It's municipal drinking water. It's the shipping — he calls the lake the "gateway segment" of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence Seaway. And it's the Coast Guard, which he credits with 9 of the 11 icebreakers "securing commercial shipping lanes free of charge." He signed an inventory.
