Pete Hegseth struck seven Army officers from the two-star promotion list as the Army Secretary who complained about him to the White House walked out the door.

A board of senior Army leaders had approved the list of 18 for major general. Hegseth cut seven of them, current and former military officials told the New York Times; NBC News put the count at at least six, citing three US officials. Neither outlet named the officers.

The Times ran the full count this week: Hegseth has fired more than 80 generals and admirals or blocked their promotions since he took the Pentagon — about one in ten of the military's top officers, by the paper's analysis. The Times also found the smallest share of women nominated to general and admiral rank in at least 25 years.

Dan Driscoll quit Sunday. The Army Secretary had warned the White House — including chief of staff Susie Wiles — about the "widespread and seemingly indiscriminate firing" of senior officers, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News. That account rests on unnamed sources, not a public record; the resignation is. Narativ reported his exit Sunday night: Driscoll quit the Army after Hegseth fired his chief.

Driscoll warned, then Driscoll quit. When the warning becomes the exit, the thing warned about is already underway.
