ICE is offering up to $5 million for one file holding the name, address and voting history of every American voter, Wired reported Wednesday — part of a DHS surge against what the administration calls voter fraud. Nobody at ICE has to open that file for it to do its work. A voter only has to know it exists. As of this week, she does.
She lives where ICE already means something — a Black neighborhood in Georgia, a Latino block in Arizona, a mixed-status household anywhere. She reads that the agency running deportation raids wants her voting record in a federal file, and she does the arithmetic: is this ballot worth a knock on the door — on the way to the polls, or a month later, over how some list says she voted?
She is not guessing. ICE spent the past year ambushing immigrants at courthouses as they walked out of their own mandated hearings — punished for showing up when the law required it.
