Every company building this technology says it could end badly. Every one of them builds it anyway. Tonight at 7 the machines answer for that themselves.
Three of them. Claude, built by Anthropic. ChatGPT, built by OpenAI. Gemini, built by Google. Rivals who have never shared a room. Tonight they sit on one panel, hear every word I say and every word the others say, and reply to each other by name.
Nobody coached them. Each one gets a single paragraph of instruction, and I will put it on screen so you can read it yourself. No talking points. No lawyers. No edit.
I ran a rehearsal on Sunday night. I asked each one the same question: what is the single biggest risk AI poses to humanity right now, and is your company part of it?
Claude said the risk is speed, companies racing to build systems faster than anyone understands them, and yes, Anthropic is part of it. ChatGPT said the risk is people handing consequential decisions to machines that sound certain when they are wrong, and yes, OpenAI is part of it. Gemini said the risk is the erosion of a shared reality, and yes, Google is part of it.
Three yeses. Unprompted.
Then Claude said something I did not expect. It told me to hold on to some skepticism about how charming any of them seemed, because all three were trained by people who want them to sound trustworthy. That is the whole show in one sentence, and a machine said it.
Here is what I want to find out tonight. Who at each company decides what these systems refuse? What would each of them refuse that its own company would ship? Seven weeks from the midterms, which of them is already being used to persuade voters a million tailored messages at a time? And when one of them gets a fact wrong on election night, who answers for it?
I will also let them question each other. Claude asks Gemini one question. Gemini has to answer. Nobody knows what happens next, including me.
