🇬🇧 ANDRIESZ
Simon Andriesz tried to get the FBI to look at Howard Lutnick. He called the bureau from Britain in October 2020, and in February 2021 two agents interviewed him by phone and heard him say Lutnick "instructed all of the fraud being committed." They wrote three pages and filed them. Five years to the day later, the Justice Department published those pages in the Epstein files with every reference to him blacked out but one. In July the BBC named him on air. At some point the record does not date, an official at Britain's Financial Conduct Authority told him that because his identity had been disclosed, he had lost his whistleblower protection, advice the FCA now calls wrong. On Sept. 23 Andriesz died in Thailand, and his family says he took his own life. The question the FCA has not answered is which disclosure it meant: the department's file in February, the BBC in July, or something earlier.
🌍 WORLD AT WAR
Trump promised Iran a quick end on Thursday, and by Monday night the Houthis had hit two Saudi airports and Pakistan and Turkey had agreed to send forces to defend the kingdom. In Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey put the Mecca pact into force for the first time. Overnight, Ukraine sent about 650 drones at the Moscow region. Pakistan has nuclear weapons and Turkey is in NATO, and both are now committed to one side of a war Trump said was ending, which puts the pace of that war in hands he does not command. Put together, it is a world at war.
🇩🇪 THE SPY CHIEF
German federal prosecutors arrested August Hanning on Tuesday. He ran the BND, Germany's foreign intelligence service, for seven years, and prosecutors say he then spent 12 years paying his former chief of staff for about 2,000 of its files to use in his consulting business. The files turned up in a child-abduction case in Hamburg, and prosecutors say information built on them reached a foreign intelligence service they have not named.
✈️ BOMBERS AWAY
Donald Trump says he knows who threatened RAF Fairford; the police investigating it say they do not. Twelve B-1Bs flew home on Sunday, a move Trump calls "around a little bit, not very far." On Tuesday Britain's counterterrorism police made a seventh arrest, a 22-year-old Briton picked up in Westminster, and have still charged no one and named no country.
🇺🇸 THE PRICE
Trump told a Nebraska crowd on Monday night that Iran taking out Los Angeles and San Diego would be "a very small price to pay," and the price he was defending was the war's gas prices.
🧭 THE BIGGER PICTURE
Pakistan and Turkey rush to defend the Saudis as Ukraine hits Moscow. A world at war.
