Anne Carson won the Nobel Prize in Literature on Thursday. She is from Toronto.

The Swedish Academy gave the 76-year-old Canadian author the prize "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." The Academy's permanent secretary reached her in Iceland, where Carson said she was listening to the wind.

Alice Munro was the first Canadian woman to win, in 2013. Carson is the second.

Mark Carney called it "a proud moment for Canada." His country is the one Donald Trump wrote up on Truth Social on Feb. 2, 2025, as "our Cherished 51st State."

That is the country that delivered a laureate this week. Trump spent Wednesday on his own Nobel. "It is about that time," he told the press in the Oval Office, and the committee has "a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me." He said he was "very honored to receive it indirectly last time by the recipient," and that he should get the prize for wading into eight conflicts since he took office. The other sides of several of those conflicts dispute his role, and fighting has flared again in some of them.

Carson's prize is literature, from Stockholm. The Peace Prize comes from a separate committee in Oslo, and she has nothing to do with it. Trump keeps saying a Nobel is due to him. The neighbor he mocks collected one Thursday without asking.
