Christiane Amanpour is leaving CNN after 43 years. She announced it less than two weeks after David Ellison took the network, and the same morning Semafor's report had Ellison's editor at CBS hunting for a Muslim Brotherhood link to a Senate candidate. Amanpour is CNN's Bari Weiss story, told from the other end. At CBS the owner's editor walked in. At CNN the anchor walked out.
CNN chairman Mark Thompson told staff in a memo on Monday. Her daily CNN and PBS shows end at the end of this year. Her CNN International program shrinks to a weekly early in 2027 and concludes in May, and she leaves at the end of June. Thompson wrote that the two of them had discussed it "for several months." He gave no reason. Amanpour put out her own statement the same morning.
She said what worried her in May. She said then that she was concerned "based on what's happened to the other things that he's taken over already, like CBS News." That was five months before he owned her network.
