Trump's government spent the week going after Democrats one at a time, and a federal judge had to stop the door-knockers. The targets are all on one side.
Since September, Homeland Security Investigations agents have turned up at homes in nine states and asked whoever answered whether they are a citizen and whether they voted. The agency posted the photos itself. Late Wednesday, Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín ordered it to stop in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington and Wisconsin wherever agents know, suspect or should suspect that the person at the door is a citizen. She wrote that the practice likely violates the Voting Rights Act's ban on intimidating people who help others vote, and that the target lists carry a "high likelihood of error." No federal database says who is a citizen. The agents knocked anyway.
The order will hold until the polls close Nov. 3. She paused it until 5 p.m. Friday so the administration can appeal, and it will.
While the judge was writing, Ilhan Omar said she will move out of her Washington home.
