On 7 January 2011, JPMorgan’s own people wrote down why Jeffrey Epstein still banked there.
“Catherine made sure we knew that no one on today’s call was in favor of having retained him as a client,” the email reads. “Seems it all is due to Jes’s personal relationship. Note, he has about 212 mil in the bank.”
Catherine is Catherine Keating, who ran the private bank. Jes is Jes Staley, who ran the investment bank and had been Epstein’s friend since the 1980s. The House Oversight Committee put that email in front of Staley in July and asked whether the bank kept Epstein because of him.
“No. No, I would not,” Staley answered. The bank had the authority to close the accounts, he said, “from Catherine Keating on down,” and chose not to. He was not involved.
“You’re mentioned throughout this email, though, multiple times, by multiple people,” counsel said. “Clearly, you are central to this entire decision.”
“No.”
His own lawyer cut in: “Question, answer.”
