I truly appreciate this debate, as it illuminates an important truth: we face no false choice between defending our interests and upholding our values.
We can stand with the American people during this unprecedented crisis while opposing the regime that has captured their democracy. We can remain true to the ideals of a free world while firmly confronting China, Russia, and other autocracies that threaten human rights, democratic values, and the post-World War II international order.
Wouldn't we hope for the same solidarity if our own country fell under autocratic rule? The divisive choice being presented to us serves to separate us from our friends, family, and neighbors while simultaneously driving us into China's sphere of influence.
We must remember that China and Russia are strategic partners in this global chess game. By undermining the US dollar, we weaken the financial foundation that underpins a world order aligned with our own values. If we truly wish to challenge Trump's agenda, we should strengthen alternative democratic currencies like our own - not hand Beijing the advantage they seek.
We should chart a path that defends democracy everywhere without sacrificing the international system that has fostered peace and prosperity among free nations. We are the true North great and free - This is who we are and always shall be.
Indeed you are the free North. You have the longest continuous border on the NW passage--the Arctic. China is aligned with Russia & with trump in TOC transnational organized crime. China is helping Russia against Ukraine behind closed doors. As I said they need your shipping lanes for drug, sex & human trafficking & God only knows what else. Strengthen your dollar & align yourself with the EU & the Euro. You have borders with France & Dennark. I understand there's a French nuclear sub off your coast for protection.
Zev, with all due respect, the US is threatening to annex us, invade a NATO ally, steal the Panama Canal from its rightful owner under international law, all the while trying to destroy our economy with tariffs and violating our trade agreement with them like it was nothing, and I am not even talking about them siding with Russia against Ukrain nor sending migrants to slave camp in El Salvador.
Marc Carney is merely defending us against them and we should be grateful.
Americans are not our friends anymore, you’ll have to deal with it.
As an American who did not vote for the current occupant of the The Oval Office, I am grateful for PM Carney's strong, rational response to the current US insane regime and the illegal moves it has made. I value his leadership as democracy is threatened across the world. I am appalled and disgusted by what this fascist regime is doing to Canada, to the world, and to the American people. The people of the world must act as they must to protect democracy across the world with a clear-eyed view of other partners who would seek to manipulate and or destroy your sovereignty but perhaps in a more insidious manner than the open bullying of this wannabe king in the US.
I have supported financially, as able, the battle being waged in the courts. I have always voted with clear conscience for the dignity of human life and democratic values without ignoring or discounting the sins of the US government of the past or present. There are millions like me. We march. We call. We write. We engage. We won't stop. Yet we had Trump 1.0 and now Trump 2.0.
Deanne, I apologize for depicting all Americans with such a wide brush. I know there are millions of people just like you over there who have the same values as us and are trapped in a regime that is heading resolutely towards dictatorship. Still this is not the feat of one single mad man, contrary to what Zev was implying. A majority of your countrymen and women chose to elect Trump for a second time in full knowledge. Particularly telling is the fact that his insurrection attempt of Jan 6 was not enough to turn those voters away. As much as I believe that Canada and other democracies need to stand firm against this new American imperialism, I remain convinced that only the Americans themselves can resolve this extremely serious situation for good.
Fair points, and well taken. Productive change in the US must come and has come from within in the past, but it has also been helped by external pressures. I simply applaud and appreciate those who, like your current PM, are able to take firm and productive action. I am also chilled by how well placed the CCP is for a variety of reasons. I work in healthcare and have experienced the extensive, successful hacking efforts of various groups based in China--and this is external to the currency argument. (We have also come to know the sponsored hacking from Russia and North Korea.) In my region, even utilities have been disrupted by hacking.
Your argument about the J6 events is particularly well taken. I bear witness to now deluded family, friends, and acquaintances primarily agreeing to points of view because of their source of information and reject what formerly would have horrified them.
Literally, people receive sophisticated and curated propaganda from "news," church, and even from employers in the attempt to shape (particularly) white voters into Xtian white nationalists who are largely disgusted by DEI and trans athletes. I only worry that similar movements are present in countries across the world. Some argue that Americans are largely poorly educated and simple-minded. This is likely to grow substantially worse as public funds are gutted from educational systems and funneled to religious schools, further making change from within more problematic. What even religious Americans seem to respond to is a loss of wealth. But even now, some Magates are prepared to go the distance in defense against what, in their view, is unjust "persecution. " I can not disentangle religion from what is happening.
I don't think the USD will survive as the reserve currency. I'm not arguing it should. Certainly, I hope that the ideals of democracy win against autocracy worldwide--not just in government but also in trade.
Thank you for your time and engagement. I sincerely appreciate it.
Zev...Trump Regime is no friend to Canada trade realities. Never honoured any agreement. Constantly took us to WTO, we'd win, then still not honour the ruling. But really, who made China so strong? The United States. Now their child is grown... From Karl J. Martin FB Meta post: The single most important person responsible for facilitating the massive transfer of industrial might from the United States to China is none other than George Bush, Sr.’s brother, Prescott Bush Jr., W’s uncle.
Thanks to George Bush Sr.’s work in helping to open up China following Nixon’s groundbreaking overtures, it quickly became necessary as the 80s closed for streamlining and finding a way to maximize the profits of America’s industrial elites by securing the cheapest labor on the planet.
Enter Prescott Bush Jr. and the hand-greasing, deal-making that he helped bring about to encourage U.S. based manufacturers to offshore and build new capacity (plants) in China.
Having worked for the Greater Houston Partnership earlier in my career, I understand the nature of what a 'Chamber of Commerce' does in bringing all the right parties to the table to assist in making a deal happen to promote a city or a region’s interests in securing a major investment for something transformative to happen. Benign as they might seem, a riff off the age old 'matchmaker' behind the scenes scurrying about, these organizations are key to coordinating introductions and fostering business marriages of convenience and profit.
From the website explaining (extolling) what they have done to hollow out America’s manufacturing sector.
Thanks Zev! I accidently made this comment on the wrong video, so I'll keep it short. Canada must stay away from China. It's a big hoax that 47 hates China. China & 47 have made many deals involving 100s of trademarks for Ivanka & 47. Early on in his 1st term 47 trademarked his name in China. His transportation secretary Elaine Chao's father owns a shipping line & she was involved in many nefarious acts. House Dems investigated her. 47 wants to crash our dollar & substitute his crypto, backing it all up with our Fort Knox gold he & Musk have stolen. He can't keep his mouth shut & has talked about it. Jim Stewartson wrote a Substack on this-- #GrandHeistCrypto. China & 47 want a path to NW passage to run their drug, sex & human trafficking. That's why they want Canada & Greenland. You're dealing with transnational organized crime. Carney knows economics, but he doesn't know TOC. He's walking into a trap. He's finally cut off Alaska from the mainland so I've heard. Some people on Substack figured he'd do that. Beware.
American here. Grateful for the discourse as one who voted for the sane, qualified woman and NOT the mango Mussolini. I do not know what will motivate a change in direction unless this insane regime wrecks the economy. It seems to be the only motivation to the 1% that run things here. (I acknowledge the 1.5% margin in the election and the third of eligible voters who didn't vote as well as the additional party voters.)
That said, thank you for your detailed yet understandable discussion of these global conflicts of interest and motivations for what it happening. I share them routinely. Particularly, when your takes diverge, I appreciate you circling back with the receipts. Facts and reason are such a refreshing take in this troubling time. 🙏
It is eyebrow raising if Carney is enabling China. Zev is right that we should be careful when getting on the China bandwagon … too much going on right now that is happening too fast for most to get the pulse on the story of what’s happening.
Zev, I do adore you btw. And Dean...it's a given. But this trade thing twix US and Canada under the Trump regime.... Like they want Canada to be like the US, totally transactional. See if I can post an article on this one from the CBC.... on some of the problems... https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trump-trade-war-disinformation-1.7489805
Whack to think that the rest of the world should care about or support the American people after they re-elected Trump, knowing full well who he is and what he would do with power. Whack to think that the USD represents humanitarian values like freedom and democracy, after the Trump regime has aligned itself with global autocracy. And most importantly, tactically whack: dumping US bonds increases the US cost to rollover debt, thereby constraining its capacity to fund military aggression against its democratic neighbors, while simultaneously pressuring American corporations and oligarchs to regret the painful consequences of their support for the Trump regime. Financial aggression is infinitely preferable to the military engagement that Trump hopes to provoke.
Zev - As an American, Carney’s found a way to melt, or at least singe the Don. He is the world’s Obi Wan right now. Happy to give him some space to coordinate a resistance and make a firm play. If we’re as good as we think we are, we will recover from this. If not, we will have to adjust to a new reality (that does not mean crypto).
Zev, look in the mirror. Look what your regime is doing. Look at Project 2025. Look at what you just spoke about for the US-Mexico border.
You, my friend are in delusional denial. China is no more an enemy to the world right now than the U.S.A. China is no more in human rights violation than USA right now. China owns the US and it's calling in its chips. So is the rest of the world.
Canada followed the U.S. lead in our dealings with China. As allies and trading partners, we cooperated. Then, you tried to screw with us. We got our elbows up. WHAT?! Little old Canada?
We are NOT like you. We don't bully. We don't resort to revolt nor rebelion. (1776) We don't kill our own people. (1861) We creatively solve problems. We're different.
Canada MUST go our own way right now. Your tariff and sovereignty threats cut us loose; woke us up.
Dean speaks 100% for me and all the Canadians I discuss this with. A threat is a threat. It is only a joke to you, Zev. And what your President is doing is on you, and every other American.
The US dollar WAS the standard. The US WAS the greatest Superpower. The world is moving on because of your nation's collective enthnoentric egotism, that most of the rest of the world humoured and went along with for decades, and which allowed this whole tRumpian dumpster fire to happen.
To be clear, we must defend Canada and oppose Trump in every way possible, but we shouldn't forsake our values, friends, and family to do it. Three weeks ago, we were on the path to electing a mini-Trump of our own. Had that happened, and it still may, would you have wanted the world to isolate all Canadians and abandon the liberal order in favor of autocratic rule?
A threat is a threat, but let's be precise about who that threat is. America has been captured, and the presidency has been commandeered by an alliance of foreign dictators who are using it as an instrument of power against us. We are too smart to abandon our friends and neighbors because of this erratic aberration currently occupying the White House.
By turning away from America entirely, we could be making a tragic mistake that may ultimately cost Canada its sovereignty. The real battle isn't against the American people – it's against the forces that have hijacked their democracy, the same forces that would gladly see our own democracy fall next.
Hindsight is always 20/20 and what ifs don't count in an emergency, whether it be a heart attack or when your country is being threatened. So you saying we were facing a tRump-lite 3 weeks ago is not a credible reason for holding on to a "special" relationship with the US that has rapidly failed us.
It has nothing to do with "abandoning our friends and neighbours". That's emotional clap trap. It's not personal against the American people. My granddaughters are American. My son-in-law and his entire family are American. Some of my dearest friends and colleagues are American. They seem to understand that Canada can better serve the world by getting away and returning to help them when they've gotten their American act together and only when it doesn't further hurt Canadians.
And no one I know, certainly not me, is advocating for abandoning our values for an autocratic world. On the contrary. I buy goods from China all the time, or used to before I boycotted Amazon, because it served my best interests. My values and sovereignty were not being threatened by China. Still aren't.
My Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan is somewhat invested in Brookfield. I am served well, as in I can survive, because of it. Do I consider the negative that it may be off-shore? A little, but I value my economic survival more. Is it hypocritical? In a real life practical perspective, no.
It's the old oxygen-mask on an airplane flight analogy. You put your mask on first. Canada needs to save itself first. Then we can take care of others, and assess the democratic values we cherish from a stronger position of influence on those others, while respecting differences.
This may seem like nit-picking but I voted for Mark Carney as the leader of the Liberal Party more than 3 weeks ago. He became the interim PM on the night of March 9th and from before that evening he had made clear that Canadians need to stand up for Canada in the face of tRump and also to stop our own "mini-trump". The Lib leadership contenders all ran and lost on that factor.
Still, a lot can happen in three weeks or in the US case, now 72 days, but a lot of damage was done to democracy by the US president and crew in the first 21 days, i.e., in the same time our federal election has officially been running. Also, if you believe Timothy Snyder, America has become, as of yesterday's Executive Orders re: the DOJ going after Miles Taylor and Chris Krebs, a full-fledged autocracy.
Now I have some old lady wisdom for you: Wait and see doesn't work when you are being abused. Believe me, I know from experience. You can only take so much and then you must act hard and fast and Yes! you leave the relationship. You must disconnect and find alternative support systems. Your life may depend on it!
It doesn't matter if the abuser's family are basically nice, don't support what the abuser is doing to you, and yet don't want things to change in their relationship with you, because darn it, they love you! So they try to sweet-talk you into going back into the relationship to "work things out".
Even the abuser likely might make promises to change. Then the abused might make excuses for their abuser's behaviour: that they're being manipulated and controlled by outside forces like a cruel boss or a gambling habit. It's our duty or our vow or our values not to abandon them. Or is it when survival is at stake?
Bottom line is the abuse must stop first. At any cost. But...and this is the key...when trust has been broken you must stand on your own. Defend your own interests. Protect yourself. Cut ties that no longer serve you. Move on! And if this means, in the case of our country, making new friends and new allies, then we have learned from our mistakes and with new wisdom, will do better.
Finally, this is not advocating for turning away from the USA entirely. It's not a zero-sum game. It means, to continue using the abusive relationship analogy, that a RESPECTFUL separation/divorce agreement has to happen, where terms are laid out so the abuse cannot happen again, and both sides can live equitably and relatively happily ever after.
The abuser may even have learned a valuable lesson about respect.
Is that Brookfield Asset Management? If so, you're in trouble. BAM is involved in all sorts of nefarious business & has helped Jared Kushner get out of debt in his 666 property & also the Vice Chair & managing partner, Ron Bloom, was a trump appointee on the US Postal Service board & conspired with mobster DeJoy, the PG, to try to privatize the USPS. Here's a long article:
You defend Donald and Musk? Bring back all Venezuelans. Greenland is out of Curtis Yarvin. I don't believe you are defend. Yes incels all of them. I truly surprised. At least got Vance Theil's puppet.
I truly appreciate this debate, as it illuminates an important truth: we face no false choice between defending our interests and upholding our values.

Zev, it's called FAFO. It's the Art of the Deal.
Sorry. ❤️🇨🇦
