I have been saying since last summer that the Christian Nationalists wanted to return to the middle ages and turn the US into a feudal society. So, I think this metaphor is an obvious one. We need a way better educated society for people to understand what is going on. Historian Jefferson Cowie said in a couple of recent speeches that 2/3 of Americans do not have a college degree. This is who voted for Trump because they did not see the Democratic party as including them. Obama did a much better job of having a message where these people saw themselves included, until Trump came along and that appealed to them even more.
