The Pentagon finally offered and explanation for why Pete Hegseth is summoning 800 generals to Quantico Tuesday: a speech about “warrior ethos” and military readiness. The announcement came hours after retired Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges tweeted that German generals were “called to a surprise assembly in Berlin” in and “required to swear a personal oath to the Führer” – a direct response to our reporting connecting Hegseth’s unprecedented summons to Hitler’s military purges

.

Hegseth’s response to Hodges was telling: “Cool story, General.” The dismissive sarcasm from America’s Defense Secretary about comparisons to Nazi Germany would be concerning under normal circumstances. But these aren’t normal circumstances.

A defense official familiar with the planning laid it out starkly: “It’s about getting the horses into the stable and whipping them into shape. And the guys with the stars on their shoulders make for a better audience from an optics standpoint. This is a showcase for Hegseth to tell them: get on board, or potentially have your career shortened.”

The “warrior ethos” explanation rings hollow when you examine the logistics. Flying commanders from active war zones, at a cost of millions, during the final day of the fiscal year when a government shutdown could strand them – all for what sources say will be less than an hour of remarks about military standards and grooming regulations. The Pentagon has video conferencing. There’s no operational reason to physically concentrate America’s entire military leadership in one room.

What makes the Nazi parallel particularly striking isn’t just the summoning itself – it’s the pattern. Hitler’s February 1938 meeting came after he’d already removed War Minister Blomberg and Army Commander Fritsch through manufactured scandals. Hegseth has already fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, the Coast Guard Commandant, and the Navy’s top officer. Hitler used his gathering to retire sixteen generals and transfer forty-four others. Hegseth has announced plans to cut military leadership by 20%.
