The Big Media Chill
When 60 Minutes' executive producer quit over Paramount's merger politics, he exposed a much bigger story
What happened last night on the closing two minutes of CBS News’ “60 Minutes" was unprecedented. Correspondent Scott Pelley turned to the camera and told viewers that executive producer Bill Owens had resigned because he could no longer "make independent decisions based on what was right."
"Bill resigned on Tuesday. It was hard on him, and it was hard on us," Pelley said. t was hard on him and it was hard on us," Pelley said. "But he did it for us."
Owens resigned to protect the program's independence. Indeed, he was uniquely positioned to sound the alarm on what appears to be a coordinated approach by the Trump administration and his allies to control media outlets.
Here are the facts: Paramount installed new editorial overseers at "60 Minutes" following Trump's lawsuit over a Kamala Harris interview. Legal experts widely consider this lawsuit meritless, yet its timing coincides with Paramount seeking regulatory approval for its Skydance merger – approval that will come from Trump's FCC appointees.
The coordinated effects are seemingly disconnected but in reality they are coordinated, designed to pressure networks into compliance. The lawsuit provides pretext for editorial oversight and the FCC approval creates leverage to ensure control. After six decades of editorial autonomy, "60 Minutes" now operates under external supervision, precisely when preparing coverage on sensitive topics like Gaza.
I endured a similar coordinated effort when I was forced out of CBS News 15 years ago - now the stakes are much higher but the strategy is unmistakable. What's different now is who is likely to control the Paramount empire, if the merger with Skydance closes.
Paramount and Tik Tok
The Ellison family behind Skydance has documented connections to Israel. Larry Ellison maintains close relationships with Netanyahu, hosting him at his Hawaiian estate and contributing millions toward Israeli military causes. His son David has similarly donated substantial amounts to Israeli causes. David will be CEO of the new powerhouse conglomerate, if the merger is approved.
Lesley Stahl, one of America's most respected journalists, stated plainly: "I have been made aware of interference in our news processes, and calling into question our judgment." This admission from a veteran journalist merits serious attention.
The strategy extends beyond traditional media. Larry Ellison's Oracle is currently the front-runner to control TikTok's U.S. operations or manage its American user data under the forced divestiture law. The justification for this transfer is protecting Americans from Chinese surveillance, yet the platform's data collection capabilities would potentially transfer to a company whose founder maintains documented foreign government connections. The surveillance architecture remains intact – only those who access it would change.
What's emerging is potentially the largest media empire in American history. A traditional media conglomerate combined with America's fastest-growing social platform would create unprecedented ability to shape political narratives across multiple information channels.
Media Capture
The pattern becomes clear when examining each element in sequence: Editorial oversight appears immediately after a lawsuit. The lawsuit coincides with a critical merger requiring regulatory approval. The merger involves parties with documented connections to foreign governments. Simultaneously, the same corporate interests position themselves to control a major social media platform, subject to Trump’s approval.
This coordinated approach to “media capture” is part of a pattern we see in other countries where democracy has eroded. In Hungary and Israel, independent media was systematically dismantled through regulatory pressure, strategic acquisitions, and legal challenges. The strategy works by creating conditions where journalists self-censor for fear of being fired rather than through explicit censorship orders.
Bill Owens' departure signals a high water mark in American journalism. His principled resignation is heroic, a lone act of resistance in a sea of capitulation that is threatening to submerge American journalistic independence.
Owens may have been the right person, in the right position, at the right moment to sound the alarm. His resignation is unlikely to halt the merger, but it signals the growing threat media capture poses to the bedrock of American democracy.
oh what a time to be and what a fight ahead. This will NOT be quick. AND trump will have crippled free and fair elections by 2026 with so many law suits pending it won't reach the poll dates...IMPEACHMENT is the ONLY option and I think the Whistle blower and CLEAR treason is the smoking gun..fingers and toes crossed !
