It's difficult to imagine Curtis Yarvin’s Neo-Reactionary movement or DOGE without the so-called "PayPal Mafia" - whose key founders—Musk, Thiel, Sacks, and Botha—share connections to South Africa during apartheid, a system of industrial-scale segregation of Black South Africans by a minority white population that colonized the country in the 1600s. Apartheid or "separate development" was created through a complex web of rules and laws introduced in the 1950s that elevated whites and subjugated other races, particularly black citizens.

Those at the top accumulated extraordinary wealth from South Africa's diamonds, gold, and minerals while those at the bottom worked for near slave wages in dangerous conditions, sometimes miles underground. This wealth extraction rested on laws that often defied sense and humanity, building an authoritarian state based on segregation, scapegoating, and surveillance.

Apartheid's End: 1989 Through Your Eyes

Take a trip back with me to South Africa in 1989. To the Jacaranda-lined streets of the country’s whites-only capital, Pretoria. Apartheid is at its breaking point. International sanctions and the anti-apartheid movement squeeze the economy, and change seems inevitable, despite persistent denials from then prime minister F.W. de Klerk.
