Israel has internal dissent between half the country, which does not go to synagogue at all, and most of the other half, who are observant Modern Orthodox and Haredi Jews. Among the Haredi (Israel's dirty, but open secret), are Jewish people who do not believe that Israel should have been founded in 1948; while most of the Haredim have reconciled themselves to the fact of Israel's formation that year and have decided to make the best of it, there are some who do not recognize the Jewish state at all and are very much anti-Zionist.
The Haredim are exempt from the military draft, which is the subject of much angry debate in the entire country, particularly because of the fast-growing numbers of them, since they don't practise birth control.
Also, there are currently 12 political parties in the Israeli Knesset, representing very different political views. All governments formed in Israel have been coalitions of some sort and are often very shaky arrangements.
All this to say that without external conflicts or confrontations with the Palestinian peoples, and, therefore permanent peace, most Israeli politicians fear, with good reason, that Israel could well dissolve itself in civil war. Conflicts with the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, plus external conflicts with Hezbollah in Lebanon and with Iran are what hold Israel together, If Israel suddenly found itself at peace with the Palestinian people, with all of its immediate neighbours, and Iran, would it survive? I'm not so sure.
They are the dirty, but open secret of Israel. Zionists will cringe if you mention the Haredim and the anti-Zionist stance of many of them. They will even say that the Haredim are crazy people. If you criticize Israel and are called anti-Semitic by any Zionists, who will tell you that in order to shut down discussion about the actions of the Jewish state, you can throw that fact in their faces.
