I, too, utterly depend on Substack but must question its funding model. As someone on state pension(s), the budget is tight and I can only support a few publishers. If Substack charged a single monthly/annual amount and divided it by readership, or introduced a pensioner rate, or more publishers added Tip Jars/Buy Me a Coffee for occasional $5 "thank you" payments, you might find subscribership and income increasing.
I’m on a budget as well. I started with a three subscription minimum and I pay for seven now. The trick is ..now I need to sell on sub stack to pay for my sub stack subscriptions.🤣
Yes! I'm grateful too! And I'm just a concerned American who wants to know what's really going on out there! While the Republicans and 47; continue to instill DAILY FEAR to not be truthful, Not to say anything Against the Imbecile or secret service will be at your Door!?!
10 comments later..🤣 listen if you guys need any help developing Internet concepts based on solid psychological principles—I need a job!! i’ve done creative writing my whole life, but my career was mostly in technical, psychological writing and research.
I’ve been following the three of you from the beginning and I had no idea who you were before SubStack introduced us. I have followed the algorithm organically. Listening to Hamish discuss it just makes me feel even more secure and trustful of Substack. My children just turned 16 and 18 and I’ve been homeschooling so it’s time to go back to work and I forgot that I’m a writer. The three of you are so inspiring and yes hearing you talk here.. what a treat! I’ve started off timidly, and I’m trying to build my brand before. I actually take off so hearing your advice is a godsend. We all are quite lucky to be alive while Substack is taking off and using a psychological algorithm that’s friendly and builds a community instead of exploiting addiction💪🏼❤️
Thanks for this great interview with the co-founder of Substack. Can you tell us the other co-founder? ;-) It's interesting to find out the 'history' of Substack! I kind of get busy subscribing to different Substacks & paying for a few (I wish I could afford more!) & don't think about the bigger picture & all the ramifications of this great media platform. It's truly a democratic process with independent writers in all venues, setting their own rates (within a certain context) & having no corporate overhead. I wonder if there's any moderation of the different writers, as far as control is concerned, or is it just left to be moderated by the public with writers being cast aside or abandoned if people think they're too 'out of line'?
Hamish, is this the right you? I saw you on Zev/Dean’s live chat today and you’re brilliant. I’m so pleased with Substack so far and happy to meet you. But I typed your name in the search and there were so many! So… just trying to find the real you. 😂
Also, I could tell that Hamish was a Kiwi from his accent. My daughter rents from a Kiwi and her Polish husband in Germany, and they live next door with their 5 children, so when I visit her and we hang out with them I am getting to tell the Kiwi from the Australian accent.
Yes. Thank you! Substack is wonderful. I spend a lot more on Substack than I do on other media, although I still have other media as well. Look at all of the people coming to Substack.
However some people are worried about Substack getting shut down in the Trump/Musk world, and are lookiing for similar platforms not in the US.

This is a great clip!
Thanks Zach.

Sorry I missed you guys. I’ve been looking forward to it all day! I’m catching it now though. Thank you.

Trouble is when you all go live none of us call follow you all as we work or have other things going on, and they expire unlike utube

Does Substack collect and sell user information?
